Since major Update a few days ago: blackscreen after entering password

Hi together , noob here!

Hope you can help: after the last update a few days ago my system boots normally to the point where I enter my password. Then the screen gets dark and enters powersaving-mode. System seems to run in the background, while I can restart it with CTL-Alt_DEL.

Thanks to Timeshift I managed to restore my system but any new attempt to update fails into the same result.

I’m running a Ryzen PC with AMD-GPU and two different HDD’s (one with Win11, one with Manjaro) between which i can select in the GRUB-menue at startup.

You mean you see the greeter with the password prompt or you do not see it?

I see it and i can enter my password. THEN the screen turns black and enters powersaving-mode and says “no signal”.

Looks like something video or wayland related…but i will let the more experienced be the judge of that. In the meantime you can post your inxi (see the links above) from a live usb session.
Maybe wayland is not working in your config and as x11 got removed from plasma and gnome that is why you are stuck. But this should not switch the monitor to standby so i don’t know.

You can also try to select another type of session from the greeter screen - x11 or wayland, if you see a choice.

Hi, If i understand you right, you need an inxi from the broken system?

This would mean, that i have to run the update again to “destroy" my OS, because,like i wrote, i saved it via Timeshift into a functioning state before the update..

Ist there something i can do prior running the update to increase chances to perform a successfull update?

Reinstalling manjaro would bei my last choice, since i then would not learn anything new.. :grinning_face:

Btw. X11 and wayland are terms i did not encounter as by now, i need to read more about these..

You do not need to run an update, inxi is build in in a default install.
Boot from live session, manjaro-chroot -a (if you are on ext4 filesystem, otherwise manually), inxi -zv8, and post between 3 ticks (the </> posting button)

I am not sure which variant you using - but 7900 XTX run flawless on Manjaro. I know - because I have been running it for years.

I suggest you reboot to the display manager

  • do not enter your password
  • switch to a TTY Ctrl+Alt+F4
  • login with your username - then remove the content of the ~/.cache folder
    rm -rf ~/.cache/*

Logout and switch back to the display manager Ctrl+Alt+F2 - perhaps F1

Check in lower left corner - the session type… select Wayland

Then enter your password to login and see what happen…

Possibly the 6.3 to 6.5 where the x11 session no longer exist and therefore the known sessions are listed alphabetically.
