Hello Manjaro user community, here we have another set of package updates. This marks the second point release of 26.1 series.

This also sets Manjaro Linux into a frozen state for a while until we have finished migrating our Gitlab Instance over to a new Forgejo Instance. Current source code can be browsed in the meantime here.

Note: I’ve super limited time to do Manjaro these days. So expect delayed response from me or none at all …

New in Manjaro GNOME!

When choosing an accent color in Settings, the folder colors will now change automatically to match when using the Papirus Dark or Papirus Light icon theme.

To try it out, install gnome-shell-extension-papirus-folders-colorizer from Add/Remove Software, logout / login and enable Papirus Folder Colorizer from Extensions.

Or, if you prefer the command line:

Install:

sudo pacman -Syu gnome-shell-extension-papirus-folders-colorizer

Enable the extension:

 gnome-extensions enable papirus-folders-colorizer@NiffirgkcaJ.github.com

Logout:

gnome-session-quit --logout

Also, when applying accent colors from Layout Switcher settings, it will also set the matching folder color. Requires accent-color-change r172.c761c84-2 or newer.

KDE Plasma users with SDDM can now migrate to Plasma Login Manager

After ensuring plasma-login-manager 6.5.90-1 (or newer) is installed, run the following:

sudo pacman -Syu plasma-login-manager
systemctl disable sddm
systemctl enable plasmalogin
sudo pacman -R sddm-kcm sddm

NVIDIA 590 driver drops Pascal support

With the update to driver version 590, the NVIDIA driver no longer supports Pascal (GTX 10xx) GPUs or older.

Impact: Updating the NVIDIA packages on systems with Pascal, Maxwell, or older cards will fail to load the driver, which may result in a broken graphical environment.

Intervention required for Pascal/older users: Users with GTX 10xx series and older cards must switch to a legacy driver to maintain support:

Install the official linuxXXX-nvidia-580xx, or related DKMS packages.

Duplicated or unneeded entries in GRUB

In case you are surprised by many new entries in the GRUB menu, possibly also duplicates, this comes from a change in GRUB 2.16 which now reads the EFI variables too and processes them. To disable this new feature, in sudo nano /etc/default/grub after GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false add

GRUB_DISABLE_UEFI_FIRMWARE=true
GRUB_DISABLE_BOOTNEXT=true

Save with ctrl+s, quit with ctrl+q, and update the grub menu with sudo update-grub

libcupsfilters regressions - printing problems

Libcupsfilters 2.2 has a number of regressions. Users report loss of features, messed up print results or inability to print on some printers. If your workflow depends on printing you may need to downgrade to ver. 2.1.1
This however will put you in an unsupported state, so let’s hope for a quick patch from upstream developers. In any case this is the only solution so in case you use printing:

sudo DOWNGRADE_FROM_ALA=1 downgrade libcupsfilters

Select the 2.1.1-4 version from the menu, confirm, and then also say yes to adding it to IgnorePkg (you will have to remove it from there when the problem is solved).

Be careful that forcing the downgrade for -stable could cause problems later if you forget to re-enable it (by removing the IgnorePkg from /etc/pacman.conf with your preferred editor).

You need to restart CUPS also:

sudo systemctl restart cups

P.s. if you tend to be forgetful, do not add it to ignore list. This is an important problem and it is expected to be fixed soon upstream, one way or the other.

tar backup/restore scripts have been moved to tar-scripts

tar package no longer ships the helper scripts /usr/bin/backup and /usr/bin/restore.
If you rely on these tools, install tar-scripts
The core tar archiving utility itself is unaffected.

Enable the “Make available to other users” checkbox in the Details tab of configuration of Network Manager.

Some apps do not show tray icons anymore

It is a bug in upstream electron version 43, already reported. No solution except waiting for the next version. Alternatively if tray menus and icons are important for you, wait till next update, switch branch to get it faster or try flatpak or appimage versions of the affected apps.

Affected is everything using the system electron, currently ver.43. Apps depending on older versions are fine.

You can easily check what will be affected on your installation even before the update. Open pamac, search for electron in the installed apps, check the dependencies in the “required by” section.

Graphical artifacts after the update

Probably only affects some combination of amd gpu and monitors.

Workaround: change the “Color accuracy” setting from efficiency to color accuracy. In KDE, this option can be configured under “System Settings → Display & Monitor”

Note that this in theory can increase latency, especially in games.

Users of Wine, Steam, Proton install kernel 6.18 first

Since kernel 6.14 a new kernel module ntsync was introduced, that should dramatically improve the performance of windows programs and games.
It is now required to run wine. There might be ways around this, but those are neither tested nor a in the scope of the “known problems” section. 6.18 is the recommended LTS kernel to use anyway. What this practically means: install and switch to kernel 6.18 or newer before updating the system.
Users of modulejail also whitelist ntsync.

BTRFS users DO NOT install kernel 7.2rc yet

btrfs users running the linux72 rc6-1 kernel might want to consider switching to linux71 or linux618 until the btrfs COW (copy-on-write) fixup mechanism fix arrives in linux72 rc7 (or the Manjaro Team backports the fix into linux72 rc6)
Otherwise DATA LOSS can occur!

Plasma Users - updating spectacle will pull tesseract

If you are using Plasma - spectacle has new dependency on tesseract for OCR extraction of text in your screenshot.

The long choice list is languages supported by tesseract - so look more closely you will find e.g. 25 - tesseract-data-deu for German.

The part you will be looking for is the last three (3) characters of the package name.

Removing spectale

If you don’t want or need OCR capabilities, remove spectacle prior to updating your system.

sudo pacman -Rns spectacle

This package contains an OCR engine - libtesseract and a command line program - tesseract.

Tesseract 4 adds a new neural net (LSTM) based OCR engine which is focused on line recognition, but also still supports the legacy Tesseract OCR engine of Tesseract 3 which works by recognizing character patterns. Compatibility with Tesseract 3 is enabled by using the Legacy OCR Engine mode (–oem 0). It also needs traineddata files which support the legacy engine, for example those from the tessdata repository.

Previously, we installed its contents in a way that made pacman not aware of the files (using VBoxManage extpack install … from an install script). To mitigate issues during upgrade, you can use one of the following methods:

Uninstall virtualbox-ext-vnc before upgrading the system, then installing it again.
Run VBoxManage extpack uninstall 'VNC' as root before upgrading the system.
Instruct pacman once to overwrite the existing files:
sudo pacman -Syu --overwrite '/usr/lib/virtualbox/ExtensionPacks/VNC/*'

Update failed because conflicting files in /usr/lib/python3.14/site-packages/lightdm_gtk_greeter_settings

There was a little problem with

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings: /usr/lib/python3.14/site-packages/lightdm_gtk_greeter_settings/__pycache__/installation_config.cpython-314.pyc exists in filesystem

I think this is some packaging mistake upstream. But since this only affects the pycache, the folder /usr/lib/python3.14/site-packages/lightdm_gtk_greeter_settings/__pycache__/ can be deleted (i backed it up) before the update. Alternately one has to update with

sudo pacman -Syu --overwrite="/usr/lib/python3.14/site-packages/lightdm_gtk_greeter_settings/__pycache__/*"

Issue with Conky (system management tool) after upgrading from 1.22.3-3 to 1.24.2-1 with this Manjaro Stable Update: graphs don’t display correctly any more, i.e. no borders, no lines for the values to be reported, nothing - just free space… Changing/updating the color1 und color2 parameters of graph variables doesn’t change anything. This relates to CPU, DiskIO, Temp and other graphs all alike. The Conky changelogs don’t give a clue (at least not to me), therefore I decided to downgrade conky back to 1.22.3-3 - that brings graphs back to life as they were before. This behaviour showed up on two different Manjaro installations both running on Xfce and Xserver: a desktop PC with Intel N100 and integrated Intel GPU UHD, and a Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G7 IML laptop with Intel Core Ultra 125U and integrated Intel Graphics (iGPU). This is not a serious isue for me, will simply wait for further conky updates or more information regarding possible feature changes.

For me kde dolphin starts with smaller icons in details mode (even after I reset global settings which it’s supposed to use).

There is no WSJT-X package in Manjaro’s repos. If the package you are referring to is from the AUR, then you should remove it first before running your update.

After the update, you can then rebuild the package so that it links to the updated system packages/libraries.

Emacs update caused a minor issue. It started complaining about various .el files of mine not having a lexical-binding directive.

For fix, I followed the 1st answer (not accepted answer) at https://emacs.stackexchange.com/questions/85745/how-to-totally-and-completely-remove-the-no-lexical-binding-warning. I changed a few files, by hand, then used the little script in that answer for the rest which worked great.

Something is up. Will check out 6.18 in a minute as well but I think it it related to a Kwin bug.

I have Night Light auto disable via script when launching games in the evening, noticed cursor unresponsiveness on game launches.

When toggling Night Light a couple of times on/of ends in log amdgu:
kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* [CRTC:447:crtc-3] hw_done or flip_done timed out followed by kwin_wayland[1305]: The main thread was hanging temporarily! the system freezing and and kwin restarting.

On searching Kwin 6.4.7-7 seems to has a bug leading to instability with AMD gpu’s as described and confirmed here on CachyOS’s github.
The logs will show this entry kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* Unsupported screen format RA24 little-endian (0x34324152)

For now I have globally disabled Night Light.
