Manjaro stuck on boot screen

I have been using Manjaro for a few months now perfectly fine. Today, I was getting a new monitor set up, and had been messing around with the display settings and rebooted it a few times with the os working fine. Then one of the times after I adjusted the display settings again, it got stuck at the boot screen:

/dev/nvme0n1p2: recovering journal
/dev/nvme0n1p2: clean, 684050/61030400 files, 104342209/244112696

I’ve tried booting it a few times and left it for a while to see if it would eventually work, but it never did. I then installed a small partition to test things and that partition worked. I’ve looked around and tried several solutions but nothing’s working. Is the original partition lost? If so, is there any way to get my files from the original partition or is everything lost?

I don’t know if this makes a difference but the command used to copy this info is from the test partition and not the partition that isn’t loading.

I’m using the Plasma DE.

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information. [HowTo] Provide System Information
  2. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

How to boot from USB into live Manjaro (for repair):

Hi @miraclemax, and welcome!

This is just a message, usually hidden when everything starts correctly, telling you everything on that SSD is fine.

You didn’t mention which DE you use, which would be necessary to know if this is to be troubleshot (Is that even a word?_

So, I think it’s kind of obvious by now, that in order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Also, if your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

I followed the wiki page linked in the page you linked and reinstalled the grub bootloader but it’s still not loading.

Then try to boot the Manjaro USB stick and check the filesystem.

The message means, that the filesystem is not unmounted correctly.

I beg to differ.

I get the same message on each and every startup. Have been for 2+ years now. And my drive is healthy as a, well, a new, young SSD. I also never turn off my PC without a proper shutdown. And I’ve also never had any data loss. Besides, this :point_down:

Clearly states the drive is clean.

Edit:

I just remembered, I also read somewhere that the message is displayed because of nvidia drivers. Counter-intuitive and doesn’t make even the slightest bit of sense, but there it is.

Edit #2:

However, booting into a live environment and from there entering a chroot environment, to obtain logs might not be to bad of an idea.

How to chroot

  1. Ensure you’ve got a relatively new ISO or at least one with a still supported LTS kernel.

  2. Write/copy/dd the ISO to a USB thumb drive.

  3. When done, boot with the above mentioned USB thumb drive into the live environment.

  4. Once booted, open a terminal and enter the following command to enter the chroot encironment:

manjaro-chroot -a
  1. If you have more than one Linux installation, select the correct one to use from the list provided.

When done, you should now be in the chroot environment.

But, be careful, as you’re now in an actual root environment on your computer, so any changes you make will persist after a restart.

From within the chroot environment, please run the following and provide the output here:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=4 --no-pager

Explanation:

  • The --boot= argument limits the log files to the previous boot (-1). Feel free to adjust the value as necessary: - for the previous boot, -2 the one before it, -3 the one before that, and so on, and so forth;
  • the --priority= arguments limit the messages to warnings and errors only;
  • the --mo-pager argument removes the need for human interaction to view the full log, making it ideal for use to obtain logs for providing to the forum here.

When I type in the first command, all it says is

zsh: command not found: manjaro-chroot

The command is manjaro-chroot -a .

manjaro-chroot is available on live-cd/usb :wink: (not in a normal install)
