GNOME return to X11 from Wayland

Hello, after the update, I can no longer run an x11 Xorg session, and now I can only select Wayland. /usr/share/xsessions/ is empty, and there are no restrictions on xorg in /etc/gdm/custom.conf. Now my system constantly shows me popups saying “Allow inhibit shortcuts” when I open the Xfce dropdown terminal and in other situations. It’s incredibly annoying. xkill doesn’t work for obvious reasons. I previously switched to x11 because of this problem, but now I can’t switch back. I don’t know how to solve the popup and xkill issues, and I suspect this isn’t the only problem, as I’ve encountered a ton of problems with Wayland in the past. What should I do?

Upd: Also, Win + Tab for switching between windows of same application dont work also

Welcome to the forum! :vulcan_salute:

Well, GNOME 49 has completely dropped support for X11 and is now Wayland-only. This is also the reason why xkill doesn’t work anymore, because xkill is specific to X11.

As a new member, you may want to subscribe to notifications for the Announcements > Stable Updates category. Every bundled update, whether it’s for Manjaro Testing or Manjaro Stable, always comes accompanied by a dedicated announcement thread.

  • The first post of the thread contains the changes with regard to the previous bundled update.

  • The second post of the thread details the potential problems, and how to deal with them.

  • The announcement thread also always contains a poll (in the first post), and a summary of past issues (in the second post), for those who’ve skipped an update — which is not advised with a rolling-release distribution, but it does happen.

Well, I’m no expert on GNOME — I myself am a dedicated Plasma user — but in order for people to be able to help you, you should provide us with enough information about your system.

The links below are a preformatted message that I regularly post to new members, but they include some very useful information to help you help us at solving your problems.

How to Request Support

Oh, that’s so sad. I read your reply, and thank you so much for the instructions, but recompiling seems like a terrible option. I guess I’ll have to get used to the pain of GNOME and find some way to at least partially compensate for the inconvenience.

You could always switch to Plasma, which is much more amenable to customization.

Well, we could have compiled X11 support back in on our overlay packages, but GNOME devs will remove it in 50 version of GNOME in less than 6 months anyway … And KDE will follow with Plasma 6.8 much later, to give Valve time to sort all issues with Wayland on their SteamOS.
