Hello community, here we have another set of package updates. Welcome to our new development cycle of Manjaro 25.1.0, code-named ‘Anh-Linh’. It is not sure yet if we will focus on Plasma 6.4 series or adopt 6.5 series early on. For sure we will introduce GNOME 49 and maybe Cosmic 1.0 (Beta).

Valkey to replace Redis in the [extra] Repository
2025-04-17 - Andrew Crerar
Valkey, a high-performance key/value datastore, will be replacing redis in the [extra] repository. This change is due to Redis modifying its license from BSD-3-Clause to RSALv2 and SSPLv1 on March 20th, 2024.
Arch Linux Package Maintainers intend to support the availability of the redis package for roughly 14 days from the day of this post, to enable a smooth transition to valkey. After the 14 day transition period has ended, the redis package will be moved to the AUR. Also, from this point forward, the redis package will not receive any additional updates and should be considered deprecated until it is removed.
Users are recommended to begin transitioning their use of Redis to Valkey as soon as possible to avoid possible complications after the 14 day transition window closes.
Manjaro, like many other open-source projects, relies on the generosity of its community through donations and corporate sponsorships to support its growth and development. These donations are essential in covering the various expenses incurred in the operations of the project such as server costs, software development tools, infrastructure expenses, training, flying people to events or conferences and the salaries of key developers. With the help of these donations, Manjaro is able to secure the necessary financial stability that allows the project to continuously improve and remain active. If you love Manjaro, consider to donate!
As you might have seen some of our team were able to attend FOSDEM 2023 and the conference proved to be incredibly productive for us. See our blog post for more.
Finding information easier about Manjaro always has been a topic that needed to be solved. With our new search we have put all Manjaro data accessible in one place and divided by sections so it makes it easier to digest: News – Manjaro
You will need to rebuild any AUR Python packages that install files to site-packages or link to libpython3.12.so.
Print a list of of packages that have files in /usr/lib/python3.12/ :
pacman -Qoq /usr/lib/python3.12/
Rebuild them all at once:*
pamac build $(pacman -Qoq /usr/lib/python3.12)
Use rebuild-detector to see if anything else needs to be rebuilt:
checkrebuild
* It’s recommended to clean your build cache first with pamac clean --build-files

Graphical issues on older hardware (Black screen, Flickering) due to mesa 25.2.x update
It seems on older hardware the mesa 25.2.x update created some regressions which may result in black screens or flickering. Some older Nvidia cards with nouveau driver seem to be affected.
You can try to use the 25.1.x series of Mesa via this repo. Simply place it on top of [extra] in your /etc/pacman.conf file and use sudo pacman -Syuu to downgrade.
[mesa-251]
SigLevel = PackageRequired
Server = https://download.manjaro.org/pkgs/mesa
If you have no graphical session available you can access the bootloader by pressing ESC key during boot and select the bootloader entry. Press CTRL+E for edit and search for the words quiet and splash. Delete those and add 3 to the line. Then execute CTRL+x to start your session. You will land in a text console TTY. Login with your user.
Edit the /etc/pacman.conf with nano: sudo nano /etc/pacman.conf. Perform the downgrade and reboot.

grub update - watch out
Before you reboot - ensure to run install-grub script to sync the efi-stubs and recreate the grub config.
Warning: ksystemstats: local (6.4.0-1) is newer than extra
If you get this warning, run the following command…
sudo pacman -Syuu
VLC does not play (certain) videos
For this update, the VLC packages were split up, and not all codecs may be installed on your system. You can install the additional codecs individually, or install the vlc-plugins-all meta-package, which will pull in all available plugins.
I did a timeshift back, due to a lot of extension issues. Need to figure it out as even “dash to panel” is not working in my setup. It Crashes even though it’s updated.
Will try to install the update / Gnome 49 with all extensions disabled and enabling them step by step.
But later tomorrow or so.
@momo51 the Black Screen issue sounds really universal. You may want to check the content of /var/log/pacman.log to understand what got updated. This guide might bring you some insights on how to check via chroot: GRUB/Restore the GRUB Bootloader - Manjaro Current install medias with yesterday’s update can be found here: Help testing 25.0.9 Release
Hello Philm,
to be more precise, the system boot up fine up to a login screen (sddm) but after entering the password, I end up on a black screen. I was able to restore an earlier partition image (macrium) and re-instate the boot loader which got me back in manjaro (kde) again. I have put the updates on hold for now until someone confirm as well. I don’t want to do all the work again.
since some components are old now (firefox, thunderbird) and cannot be update because of others dependancies, I am going back to window.
second try on one of my Gnome systems.
This time I disabled all extensions upfront, followed by disabling extensions at all, followed by logout and install via tty the Gnome 49 update.
A lot of extensions are not working, incl. relevant ones as “dash to panel”, so I will timeshift back again.
I assume you use X11 still. You may want to install additionally kwin-x11 and plasma-x11-session. Else switch in SDDM to Wayland, which is the new default.
no i was on wayland. I was using a theme with an sddm which was working fine so I am wondering if it is a problem ?

No that doesn’t work. I cannot answer back to Philm
GNOME or Plasma don’t like user customization. When a major release gets out it is best to start with a fresh user in default settings. Especially themes or plugins or extensions may create issues. Depending what got changed or additional installed, it can be easy or more complex to find out.
sddm is particularly sensitive to the configured theme - so if you are using a custom theme - please test by reverting to the default breeze or breath theme and verify if the issue persist.
After the update GNOME does not start. I recently switched to testing, so I can provide this boot log. Please let me know what else I can do to support you.
Ok I can answer now … my system is very recent (AMD Ryzen 5 5600x, Radeon RX6600.)
I have another machine also with a theme. I will reset the theme to a standard one to see if the update will go through…
**** Nope, after resetting to a breeze theme and doing the update, the system still black out on boot. I lost it ???
I am still getting a black screen after the update, just after the login screen. That is not because of theming. I had countless hours of installations. I am afraid of loosing everything. Is there a way to see what is wrong?
Either installing the install-grub script or restoring the boot loader brings you the update to your EFI system partition. (In case of BIOS boot it will take care on boot.img and core.img.)
Dash to Panel added GNOME 49 support with v70. It’s working fine here. Please create a new GNOME topic for further troubleshooting.
GNOME has dropped Xorg (X11) support and no longer ships session files in /usr/share/xsessions/. Make sure your /etc/gdm/custom.conf looks like this:
# GDM configuration storage
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=False
# Uncomment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg
#WaylandEnable=false
[security]
[xdmcp]
[chooser]
[debug]
# Uncomment the line below to turn on debugging
#Enable=true
Thanks @Yochanan , based on this I deleted the Dash2Panel Config in the dconf database, after this it is starting again and I just need to re-configure to my wishes.
Edit:
it seems to be that the Dash2Panel functionality “automatic hide” is causing the trouble … on two of my Manjaro Gnome 49 Systems Dash2Panel works without this feature - but only without … switching on makes Dash2Panel crash
