Manjaro 26.1 (Preview)

Since we released Anh-Linh in January 2026 we worked hard to get the next release of Manjaro out there. We call it Bian-May.

The GNOME edition has received several updates to Gnome 50 series. This includes a lot of fixes and polish when Gnome 50 originally was released in March 2026. You can find find release dates of each upcoming point-release here: Release Calendar. Weekly updates around GNOME can be found here.

Highlights of 50 release series are:

GNOME’s parental controls have made a massive leap forward in GNOME 50. For the first time it is now possible for parents and guardians to monitor screen time and set limits for child accounts, including bedtime schedules. The new features allow automatically locking the screen when a screen limit or bedtime is reached. Parents and guardians also have the ability to extend screen time past the limit when needed. We also ship Big Parental Controls 1.0 from our sister-project Big Linux from Brazil, to comply with recent laws there.

GNOME’s built-in remote desktop capabilities have seen significant improvements in version 50. A major performance boost comes from new hardware acceleration support (using Vulkan and VA-API). By using your computer’s graphics processor to stream video, remote sessions are now significantly smoother with much less lag and lower power consumption. Compatibility has also been improved for a wider range of hardware with the integration of explicit sync, which provides a more stable experience for those using NVIDIA drivers.

GNOME’s display technologies have received a massive set of stability and performance updates in GNOME 50.

Improved Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Fractional Scaling Support: VRR and fractional scaling have both been improved for GNOME 50, with bug fixes, stability, and user experience improvements. For users with compatible monitors, VRR provides a tear-free experience where the display’s refresh rate matches the application’s frame rate, resulting in significantly smoother motion. Fractional scaling allows what is displayed on screen to be scaled in increments, to better suit a range of display densities. When it is enabled, users can natively select scales like 125% or 150% in the display settings.

Low-Latency Cursor in VRR: The mouse cursor now operates independently of the application’s frame rate while VRR is active. This ensures the cursor remains fluid and responsive at the monitor’s maximum refresh rate (e.g., 144Hz) even if a game or professional app is running at a lower frame rate.

NVIDIA Performance Boosts: Workarounds for NVIDIA driver quirks have been implemented, targeting stuttering and frame-timing issues. The result is noticeably smoother window animations and general desktop fluidity for users with NVIDIA GPUs.

Next-Gen Color Management: Support for version 2 of the Wayland color management protocol has landed. This provides the technical foundation for creative professionals to achieve higher color accuracy across different apps and hardware.

HDR Screen Sharing: Building on GNOME’s modern color pipeline, it’s now possible to screen share monitors displaying High Dynamic range (HDR) content. This allows screen recording software to record the screen content with the same vivid colors as displayed on the physical screen.

The Plasma edition comes with the latest Plasma 6.6 series, Frameworks 6.25 and KDE Gear 26.04. It brings exciting new improvements to your desktop.

Plasma 6.6 includes a number of highly-requested features:

Plasma makes your life as easy as possible, without sacrificing the flexibility or features that have made Plasma the most versatile desktop in the known universe. With that in mind, Plasma’s usability and accessibility got improved, and practical new features were added into the mix.

Those who like tailoring the look and feel of their environment can now turn their current setup into a new global theme! This custom global theme can be used for the day and night theme switching feature.

If you have colorblindness, check out the filters on System Settings’ Accessibility page, under Color Blindness Correction. Plasma 6.6 adds a new grayscale filter, bringing the total to four filters that account for different kinds of colorblindness.

Speaking of accessibility, Spectacle can now recognize and extract text from images it scans. Among other use cases, this makes it easy to write alt texts for visually-impaired users.

With Plasma Setup, the technical steps of operating system installation and disk partitioning can be handled separately from user-facing steps like setting up an account, connecting to a network, and so on.

With our XFCE edition, we have now Xfce 4.20. Here some highlights: A new file highlighting feature (accessed from the file properties dialog) in Thunar file manager lets you set a custom colour background and a custom foreground text colour – an effective way to call attention to specific file(s) in a directory laden with similar-looking mime types. On the subject of finding files, Thunar includes recursive search.

The panel picks up a pair of new preferences. First, panel length is now configured in pixels rather than percentages, as before. Second, there’s a new “keep panel above windows” option. This allows maximised app windows to fill the area behind the panel rather than maximise its bottom or top edge to sit flush against it.

Control Centre groups all of the desktop’s various modules for managing the system into one easy-to-use window. New options are present in many of these. For example you can disable header bars in dialogs from the Appearance module; show or hide a ‘delete’ option in file context menus from Desktop; and pick a default multi-monitor behaviour before you attach an additional screen – dead handy, that.

Kernel 7.0 is used for this release, such as the latest drivers available to date. With 6.18 LTS and 6.12 LTS we offer additional support for older hardware as needed.

We hope you enjoy this release and let us know what you think of Bian-May.

I think it could be relevant to prevent users to not use NTFS drives with kernel 7.0 as it has been several reports of malfunction. All the issues seems solved in kernel 7.1.

Therefore I would advise to hold until 7.1 for final release.

EDIT: Its also relevant to say there are no reports of malfunctions with LTS kernels

EDIT: There is a bug report too, also here

EDIT: This is getting to Manjaro users already [Stable Update] 2026-05-02 - Kernels, Plasma, GNOME, Mesa, Systemd, VirtualBox, LibreOffice - #137 by alexsantee

manjaro-kde-26.1.0-pre-minimal-260505 difficult to reach live environment on HP Elitebook 820 G1

My HP Elitebook 820 G1 is in EFI mode and has a Haswell chipset.

I have tried manjaro-kde-26.1.0-pre-minimal-260505-linux618.iso and manjaro-kde-26.1.0-pre-minimal-260505-linux700.iso , and neither comes up with a live environment. However, they both work as expected in VirtualBox.

On the Elitebook I boot the iso from an USB stick, and the GRUB menu comes. I choose tz=Europe/Copenhagen and keytable=dk and leave lang=en_US and boot with open source drivers. The screen turns black, then shows some boot messages and then the graphical Manjaro wait animation. Then the screen turns black with a single underscore in the top left corner, and then - nothing!

Ctrl+Alt+F1 - no change

Ctrl+Alt+F2 - login screen for user manjaro. I write manjaro as password and press Enter and the mouse cursor disappears and then - nothing. No response to keyboard or mouse. Does not change to screen saver picture.

Ctrl+Alt+F1 - black screen

Ctrl+Alt+F2 - login screen for user manjaro, and the mouse cursor is back. I write manjaro as password and press Enter. The mouse cursor disappears and then - nothing. After a while, it changes to screen saver picture with a mouse cursor. Move the mouse and the login screen for user manjaro comes back.

I write manjaro as password and press Enter, and now the live desktop appears and works, but the key table is not dk. System Settings works, and I can set DK layout and activate it.

Open konsole and run + journalctl --boot --priority=err --output=with-unit --no-pager

I know the BIOS has a problem with ACPI, once manjaro-kde-26.1.0-pre-minimal-260505-linux700.iso is installed and booted on harddisk, the journal says

Gave it a shot using a USB key. XFCE end up with a message “cannot contact settings server” and lock up. KDE end up with a black screen.

Computer :AMD B550 - RX 5500- AMD RX570 8GB

manjaro-kde-26.1.0-pre-minimal-260505 difficult to reach live environment on AMD-system too.

The same behaviour on my desktop PC with AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and Radeon RX 590 graphics. The automatic login to live environment fails.

I perhaps have the same issue with the installation media booting to a blank, black, screen. Simply trying to switch to a tty screen (eg. ctrl+alt+F4) brought up the graphical login screen in my case. I had the same problem with the Anh-Linh release too.

Cannot login to manjaro account. Requiem login to root and use password manjaro.
After install plasma desktop i change animation close windows and after restart return to previous setting.

I have successfully performed a trial install of 26.1.0-pre KDE Plasma to a spare 250GB hard disk on a Toshiba NB550D netbook (circa 2012) upgraded to 2GB RAM. It was necessary to add extra swap via USB storage for the install. I installed to encrypted swap of 5GB, encrypted root and unencrypted /boot partition. The install was smooth and without problems.

Majaro KDE Plasma has performed well on the NB550D for several years but for the first time a Linux Kernel: Memory Shortage Avoided... message appears and the culprit program is shutdown.

I don’t know if this is because it is a preview release and still having some refinement or if Bian May is potentially going to bring the NB550D to the end of its useful life

Same here on XFCE: black screen with message box:

manjaro-kde-26.1.0-pre-minimal-260523-linux618.iso does not reach live environment without the difficulties I described above. It works in VirtualBox 7.2.8 , but it fails on my HP Elitebook 820 G1, and on my desktop PC with AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and Radeon RX 590 graphics.

Successfully installed GNOME edition onto HP ENVY x360 Convertible 13-ar0xxx, but a couple of points stand out :

1. Default installation has 125% screen scaling

Post-installation, default screen scaling is set at 125%. Switched scaling to 100% in GNOME settings, but gdm still displays with scaling at 125%.

Followed Arch wiki and created drop-in file for gdm.service to automatically reconfigure monitor setup at each boot and to set 100% scaling.

Previously, default installations had 100% scaling for both the desktop and for gdm, so not sure when this changed. I think 100% default for both is better.

On a 1920 x 1080 display at 125% scaling, the GNOME windows appear too large and everything on the gdm login screen appears blurry, including the Manjaro theming.

2. Default installation no longer groups applications in GNOME application list

The GNOME applications list (Super + A) no longer shows grouped applications, so all applications now appear ungrouped. Previously, default installations grouped at least some applications, so not sure when this changed.

I think not grouping makes the list a little more cluttered than it needs to be.

@rousseau thx for your feedback. Please chat with @Yochanan about it, since I’m not a GNOME user. Can be changes made to GNOME 50 series or some is missing to auto-group some applications as we had before in GNOME 49 series.

I’m not sure how that’s happening. I’ve seen no other reports.

I haven’t been able to track down what caused that, still looking into it.

It looks like this isn’t an entirely unknown issue, if the following report is any indication; however, it does require signup to access the Redhat Customer Portal and discover the documented solution;

Maybe it provides a clue:

I’ve updated manjaro-gnome-settings to reflect the new upstream changes to default XDG categories as of 20260531-1.

Not directly related to Manjaro settings, however it sounds like it may be related to the upstream changes.

I found the thread below in the forum : the thread describes a similar problem with gdm scaling.

https://forum.manjaro.org/t/gnome-49-login-screen-is-zoomed-in-how-to-scale-it-down/183691/4

Thanks for the update @Yochanan : I’ll test again when I next perform a reinstall.

Hi,
I will install manjaro on my new lenovo laptop as dual-boot with windows 11. Do you think this preview release cause problem or can I install it and change the kernel then? Or do you think I must use official image? I’m just curious

If you don’t touch you windows partition from linux it should be no issue. Just make sure you move to kernel 7.1 or 6.18 after installation. I would recommend 6.18 but IDK if that’s an option.
Apparently the new ntfs driver is not yet backported to 7.0, IDK if it will ever be. 6.18 is a solid proven kernel. 7.1 is still not final.

EDIT: Apparently the ntfs3 driver was patched before final release of kernel 7.0. May somebody confirm?

I may have spoken too soon. For some reason what I thought would work did not. Back to the drawing board…
