Gnome 49 login screen is zoomed-in, how to scale it down?

After the Gnome 49 update my login screen & desktop were zoomed 130%.
I was able to change the overall system in settings > display > scale & set it back to 100%

But the login screen remains at 130%, how to correct that?

/usr/share/sddm theme didnt reveal any obvious settings to me.
The accessibility settings on the login screen only make it larger still.

EDIT: I should add that its only the login screen & not the lockscreen affected.

The only thing I can tell you is that looking for anything with the name sddm in it will be the wrong place.

Configuration takes place in /etc - in /etc/gdm/… in particular
because Gnome (by default) uses GDM as a display manager - not SDDM

unless you changed / replaced the default

SDDM is the default for Plasma

Tell us some useful information about your monitor(s); their resolutions; etc. If you’re using Nvidia graphics there is an issue with the 580xx drivers on some older systems using large screens, where the higher resolutions are no longer achievable. Installing the 575xx drivers apparently fixed that sor some, the 570xx drivers, for others.

Whether this is relevant to your issue, I can’t say.

Without knowing more details, any responses will likely be tentative, at best. Please provide your system information as described (below).

Regards.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
If running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I should have included inxi.

Thank you for the system information, but you neglected to add requested detail concening your monitors.

Its an Lenovo laptop: Thinkbook 14 G2 AMD, built in display 1920x1080

    1024x768, 800x600, 640x480

OK, thanks. In that case the possible issue I referred to does not apply. It was related to the Nvidia 580xx driver and larger screen resolutions.

Regards.

Thanks.
I checked this folder & the files in place all appear to be unedited default files.

Yes.
Perhaps there can be some configuration option applied that affects the scaling - but I don’t know about it.

To me there appears to be no reason for the scaling to have changed at all.
(it did not for me, for whatever that is worth)

I was just saying that sddm files where the wrong place to look at, because sddm is not the display manager here.

ok, thanks.
I have archcraft on another partition & that uses sddm, I really just didnt think too clearly about what gnome uses. But thanks for pointing that out.
The scaling isnt a huge issue (no pun intended) its just odd seeing the power menu & login box oversized.

A post was split to a new topic: Issue with screen resolution (post 2025-12-08 update)

The solution is to copy your user monitors.xml to the system.

cp ~/.config/monitors.xml /etc/xdg/monitors.xml

(see GDM - ArchWiki)

Its seems Gnome is intentionally forcing the login screen to 125%. But I cant say why it only affects some people, perhaps if you have no modified xdg/monitors.xml
