Wifi disapeared after downgrading the kernel

Consecutively to the operation described here, which concluded with a downgrading of the kernel from 5.19 to 5.15, my wifi connection desapeared.
I tried many solutions proposed by the forum without any success.
Luckily, the ethernet wired connection works.

The loss of the wifi is quite embarassing, could anybody help me?
Many thanks in advance

P.

Hi @piechevall,

Welp, it’s kind of obvious why you wifi doesn’t work

It’s because there isn’t a driver for the adapter. So in order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Hope you manage!

Yes I noted that the issue was the absence of driver. However I don’t know how to re-install it (it was working correctly before the kernel downgrade ).

According to this page, the driveer for that adapter is in kernel 5.16 and up. From what I gather on the page, it’s the rtw89 driver. Luckily it’s in the AUR:

$ pamac search rtw89
[...]
rtw89-dkms-git 1:r148.4dc5371-3 AUR
Driver for Realtek 8852AE, an 802.11ax device

But any dkms package requires the kernel headers. So install the kernel headers, by running:

pamac install $(pamac list --quiet --installed | grep "^linux[0-9]*[-rt]*$" | awk '{print $1"-headers"}' ORS=' ')

This will install the headers for all installed kernels.

Next, install the driver:

pamac build rtw89-dkms-git

If successful, do a little dance, cross your heart, say a prayer, reboot and hope for the best!

Hope this helps!

Thanks to you, I noticed that the issue is kernel dependent.

So I reinstalled the kernel 5.19 that I had previously desinstalled because it impeached the run of Virtualbox. AND it works without need of any addition :grinning: (linux-headers was already installed). Quite strange for me.

So I have now the following alternative:

  • using 5.19: wifi works but not virtualbox
  • using 5.15: virtualbox works but without wifi

Following Zesko, it concerns only the Intel 11th gen computers with the 5.19 kernel.

I hope that the kernel 6.0 will definitely solve this issue/bug.

In any case, our discussion help me a lot. Is a Rolling Stone music convenient? I’m from the old school!
