whenever I open a file with kate, it uses as much as 25% cpu, but usually hovers around 15-13% usage.I have to kill kate in system monitor if I want it to stop running. my power consumption also jumps from 6 watts to 18.
kate version 22.04.3-1
has kate always used this much cpu?
let me know what other information I need to include
thank you for your time
Have you checked for errors by launching it from the terminal?
That doesn’t tell much without knowing what kind of CPU you use.
Hi @jake3 ,
I’ve just checked, and Kate uses 0.0% of my CPU. So I think it’s one of two reasons, or a combination of the two:
Your CPU is finding it that difficult to process Kate, even when idle. So it’s wotking that much harder.
An add-on/extension.
Which one?

I get no errors when launching from terminal, and the cpu I have is a intel i7-1165g7 I have turbo turned on in bios, its a 4 core processor, runs at 4.70 Ghs max. I can run other things like games with not super intensive graphics, like minecraft and tabletop simulator at 60 fps without needing to turn down graphics settings. as far as I can remember, kate has never used this much resources before. maybe I was just not paying attention, but it is hard not to notice my fans ramping dramatically, and my battery level decreasing far faster than it was a moment ago
If you just let Kate sit their idle without doing anything, does she get lonely?
If you just let Kate sit their idle without doing anything, does the CPU still hover around 15%?
Does the increased CPU activity remain, even after much time has passed without using Kate? Even if Kate is minimized?
What if you temporarily disable Kwin’s compositor? Same behavior?
What GPU is this?
Are you using a particular theme or one of the standard ones shipped with Manjaro KDE?
Did you test this on a live USB of the latest Manjaro ISO? (To rule out a persistent user setting.)
(Posting more complete system information can help as well.)
As an aside, I personally would disable Intel’s “Turbo Boost” feature. It’s more of a sales gimmick than useful for typical desktop/laptop home user. Even when it’s “enabled” and supported, it doesn’t really confer much benefit except for very specific use-cases.
is with all files or some ?
kate can use some plugins …
for exemple LSP can take a lot of resources
I suppose a plugin

letting kate Idle brings the cpu usage down to a normal level
forcing block compositor in special window settings immediately fixes the issue.
No GPU, only integrated graphics
my theme is brise dark lightly
16 gig ram, 500 gb ssd, framework laptop
turbo came pre-enabled on the device when I got it and I haven’t touched it since
Can you post your system info in here?
My hunch is removing xf86-video-intel
, clearing any extraneous configs under /etc/X11
, and finally rebooting might help.

Remove the package xf86-video-intel
Make sure there are no custom configs under/etc/X11/
(or its subdirectories) that you might have created at one point. (You can leave alone the included defaults.)
Reboot.

Does this happen with any other native KDE application besides Kate?

not as far as I can tell
I also tried reinstalling kate but no dice

Can you repeat this test, but with the standard default theme?

by test do you mean opening kate or do you mean rebooting after removing xf86-video-intel?
if the former, then no change

After changing the theme or after rebooting without xf86-video-intel
? (Or both?)

well I did not add xf86-video-intel back after removing it the first time and I changed the theme and rebooted, so, both?

Then I would test this on a live USB session.
Or even create a new user account on your current system, log in with it, and then test this.
If it does not happen with the temporary new user account, then it points to a configuration/config file on your main user account.
