Video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime no HDMI on Dual-GPU Laptop

My laptop is an Asus TUF FX505 which has two graphic cards - an AMD integrated and an Nvidia 1650.

Connecting an external monitor to my HDMI port shows a black screen. I think the display is detected though as the settings app shows the “join, mirror, single display” options. But they dont have any effect. Just a black screen on the external monitor.

Here are some details.

See Chapter 33. Offloading Graphics Display with RandR 1.4 :

The NVIDIA driver currently cannot be used as an output sink when the output source driver is xf86-video-amdgpu.

What might work is using the modesetting Xorg video driver for the AMD GPU.

By the guide linked by you, the file of interest i.e. /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist in Manjaro Gnome 21.0. Is there an alternate file that I have to edit or do I just create the file?

@pobrn I have tried the solution provided here and this makes the HDMI now function. But this drains a large amount of battery as all processes run on the dedicated GPU (Nvidia). This uses up about 1GB out of 4GB available on my GPU.
Do you know how to make the Nvidia card work only for showing the display rather than for all applications?

As I’ve said, what might work is using the modesetting Xorg video driver. Remove (back up) all video related Xorg configuration that you have at the moment, and create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amd-nvidia.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "amd"
    Inactive "nvidia"
    Option "AllowNVIDIAGPUScreens"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"

    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:5:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"

EndSection

and reboot, then post the output of xrandr --listproviders and inxi -Gazy.

This conf makes the HDMI work.

This although makes all applications use the dedicated GPU.

That shouldn’t be the case. What’s the output of head -n999 /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*?

@pobrn The last line here reads:

The NVIDIA driver currently cannot be used as an output sink when the output source driver is xf86-video-amdgpu.

Is this why it’s not working?

Found a few more links suggesting we can’t get these working.

Funny, but I wrote the same thing: it doesn’t work with xf86-video-amdgpu, but it might work with modesetting. Unfortunately, it looks like it doesn’t work with that either.

What I noticed in the logs is this:

[    38.992] (==) ServerLayout "layout"
[    38.992] (**) |-->Screen "nvidia" (0)
[    38.992] (**) |   |-->Monitor "<default monitor>"
[    38.992] (**) |   |-->Device "nvidia"
[    38.992] (**) |   |-->GPUDevice "amd"

and that’s not exactly what we want. The screen and the device should be “amd” and the GPU device should be “nvidia” (or something along these lines). I don’t know why this happens.

In any case, please try this configuration:

I think this is the right configuration. Regardless, the HDMI doesn’t work.

This screenshot is why I think it is the right config.
