I just finished setting up and installing software packages for my version of Manjaro. I don’t know why, but I find the system quite slow and often freezes. Could this be related to the swap setting?
At the moment, it literally freezes after I open a few programs or a few tabs of Edge.
Hi @Eragonvn, and welcome!
In order for us or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:
- [HowTo] Provide System Information,
- [HowTo] post screenshots and links,
- [HowTo] Make support easier, and
- [HowTo] Use preformatting in a forum post.
Tip:
To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:
```
pasted text
```
This will just cause it to be rendered like this:
Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.
Instead of like this:
Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.
Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.
Yes, it could. But it also could not. More info should help with determining the cause.
Hope you manage!
Basic troubleshooting would involve monitoring your system while active.
Hi @Mirdarthos , I would be glad if you could help. I have attached here my system information:

This machine seems to be on the older side, with not enough memory for no SWAP space. It could simply be that it doesn’t have enough juice.
See

For more. And your CPU also looks sort of old, so I just think it doesn’t have enough power to give.
I would think you need a swap file with that low amount of ram. I have an older pc like that except it has 4 cores with 8 threads but the same amount of ram with an SSD. It did lag at times 100%. I found with firefox it ran smooth with 5 or 6 tabs until I had other things going in the background. I did not try edge ever with any linux.
Thanks, I looked at the wiki post and set up a swap file. Can you advise me whether using a swap file or a swap partition is better for my machine’s performance?
Hi, Can you explain it more specifically and instruct me on how to do it?
AFAIK using a file or a partition has no impact on performance. The main benefit of the file is that its size can be changed more easily.
Keep the system monitor open, for instance?..
This
@Mirdarthos Currently, I’m tinkering around with zswap and when I use the command swapon
it shows up like this:
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/swapfile file 4194300 315616 -2
/var/lib/systemd-swap/swapfc/1 file 524284 519812 50
Should I set the priority of swapfc
higher or lower than swapfile
? Thanks
I can honestly not answer you on that. I have absolutely no experience with swap files. I always used to leave settings on default and lately I’ve got 16GB RAM, so I don’t use the swap. (Although it’s there, somewhere, and configured and 8GB in size, I know nothing more than that.)
Your best bet would be to look here: Swap - ArchWiki
Why do you go from “mah PC broken” to “let try various multiple things I don’t understand at the same time and complicating everything before seeing if one step brings some light on my issue”?
Test a SWAP file, see if your issue is fixed.
