System freezes due to unknown reason

I have been using Manjaro on my HP ProBook 650 G1 with 8GB of RAM Laptop for over a year without any problem, however since a couple of weeks my system has begun freezing randomly.

The first time it froze I was on a certain website and I thought that particular website [deleted] had left some malware script on my system because the system froze twice on that website.

Yet, later it began freezing on other websites like Youtube. Sometimes I suspect this happened after the last major update. I tried updating the kernel headers and it appeared that the problem had disappeared, but it came back again after I installed the software “Bottles”.

The problem disappeared for a day after uninstalling Bottles, but it has come back again.

After the system freezes I try the REISUB commands, but the system does not shutdown or restart, only the screen goes blank with only the mouse pointer showing, but not moving, when I press the ‘I’ key. The other keys give no response.

Here is the output of the inix report:

Mod edit:- I would question the logic of posting the URL of a site suspected of disseminating malware. URL removed.

Mod edit: Added proper code formatting for you, this time. :wink:

System information a.k.a. inxi? Error log a.k.a. journalctl?

Please provide your system information as described (below) formatted according to forum guidelines. It may be difficult to provide a meaningful response without those details.

Regards.

What follows is from a standard template.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

To that end, links are provided (below) - Please use them.

Be prepared to provide outputs from various commands when asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Waiting for others to blindly ask questions can be counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – Instead, please help others to make informed suggestions, based on information you provide.

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8

I am sorry for any mistakes being a newbie.

I can now definitely confirm that this error occurs while using an internet browser, usually Firefox.

Mod edit:- Formatting has been done for you this time. No charge. In future, please practice as much as you can until you get it right. :wink:

A little reading of information and links given can go a long wat toward preventing those mistakes…

All code or command output should be presented as pre-formatted text to conform with forum guidelines.

This is an example of pre-formatted text.

When composing your post, use the </> button to create two rows of three “backtick” characters – each row of three on it’s own line, as shown (below) – paste your code or command output between those rows; for example:

```
Pasted code or command output goes here.
```

This topic has be unlisted (hidden from public view) temporarily until you have attended to the previous mistake. :wink:

Regards.

I see you’re having some difficulty. The backticks should be placed above and below the “block” of pasted command output rather than every single line.

That’s MS-Windows logic. GNU/Linux does not get infected with anything by merely visiting a website, even if it does have malware on it.

In MS-Windows — like in MS-DOS — a file is executable if it has a certain filename suffix, e.g. .EXE or .COM. Therefore, in Windows, open() equals execute(). This is not the case in UNIX systems, where a file must have execute permission at the level of the filesystem layer.

More likely is that your laptop froze because of… :backhand_index_pointing_down:

… while it has only 8 GiB of RAM. Websites can get quite heavy these days, and so do the browsers themselves. With 8 GiB of RAM, you do still need a swap device in this day and age.

Another reason why your system froze could be the fact that it’s a laptop. They run much hotter than a desktop system because the components are all crammed together in a tight space and the chassis does not offer adequate cooling. Dust in the fans and/or the ventilation apertures will only make this worse.

If I were to take a bet, I’d say it was the lack of virtual memory, though. If you don’t have any spare partition sitting around, you can create a swap file instead. There are plenty of HowTos on how to do that.

From what i see i the log and can google, seems like a problem with the wifi driver or the microcode of the wifi card.
The easiest will be to try another kernel, like the latest LTS 6.12 or even 6.6.
If that does not work another easy solution will be to disable this card and use another, if you have such option. Like a usb wifi adapter.
Alternatively, there are different suggestions for tuning diverse parameters of the connection in arch and gentoo forums, but that will be hit and miss experience.

Thank you Aragorn. I will increase the RAM and get back to you. It could be a memory issue, but it is definitely not a cooling issue because the last time the system froze when I turned on the laptop after several hours today and opened the browser to check your reply which took only a few minutes. RISEUB did not work at all and I had to hard start the laptop again. The only new thing is that previously when the problem started the WiFi would turn off and its indicator light would turn orange when the system froze. It does not do that anymore. The system freezes but the WiFi indicator remains white/on. RISEUB never worked completely. It only works partly sometimes. I have begun uninstalling various software I had installed since this problem began.

With or without extra RAM, it is suggested to create swap space - at least qual to RAM size if hibernating, or about half that amount, if not.

Change to older LTS kernel first. Cause there is a very similar topic in the arch forums about kernel 6.16

Kernel 6.12 (LTS) is generally suggested. :eyes:

:warning: Kernels 6.15 and 6.16 have reached EOL and no longer receive updates from the Manjaro repositories.

Thank you soundofthunder. I am reading up on it. Looks scary stuff for a newbie like me :woozy_face:

Most welcome.

Quick tip: Use the @ characher when you wish to mention another member. A modal box will pop up where you can select a User from a dropdown.

This prevents you from mispelling a members username and ensures that the member is notified that they were mentioned – without it, they might never know.

:scream_kevin:
It’s not that scary (or difficult), really, but always ask if there’s something you don’t understand, and I’m sure someone will be happy to help.

Regards.

@soundofthunder

Thank you. I have moved to the 6.12 kernel, although I was a bit confused because the startup menu had two choices for each kernel, such as: 6.12 and 6.12 intramf. So, which is the correct one please?

The first entry is normally used, so… 6.12.

The second entry is a fallback for when the first one doesn’t work. It uses a bigger initramfs with more driver modules loaded, whereas the initramfs of the first entry contains only the driver modules for the hardware detected in your system during installation.

@Aragorn Thank you. I keep learning more and more from the replies. All this information will come in handy as Win 10 has stopped support and I am suggesting to friends and colleagues to switch to Manjaro instead of buying expensive new hardware for Win 11.

Also, make sure they understand what to expect.

Manjaro (and Linux generally) is not “a replacement for Windows” but a completely different OS for which they will very likely need to invest time and effort to learn.

The following link provides a down-to-Earth comparison that will help clear up any misconceptions. Give it to your friends and colleagues. :wink:
