Sound Server "hanging" after upgrade

Just upgraded all packages today, now the sound doesn’t play in any application, and the request “hangs” and times out when I try and play sound, causing various apps or containers to freeze.

I booted back into a 6.1 kernel, but this had no effect on the sound server issue.

Soundcard details:

Hi @alias, and welcome!

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Those with privacy concerns: note that when -z, or --filter is used, all personally identifiable information is filtered out from the resulting inxi output. :eyes:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip for legibility: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as a general introduction for new forum users. Please take the time to follow links given and learn how to create effective support requests and encourage quality responses.

Please post more information about audio cards and playback devices

You have both pipewire and pulseaudio active, so you should remove one. The usual recommendation is to keep pipewire. You should install the full manjaro-pipewire metapackage, as that will automatically remove pulseaudio and replace old pulseaudio packages with their pipewire equivalents:

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pipewire

Scotty,

Thanks heaps. Can confirm this fixed the issue, just a note, I had to do a manual “pacman -Rs manjaro-pulse” to make it work.

I actually had in my notes (that I forgot to refer to) for replacing pulse with pipewire:

This first command will remove pulseaudio including configuration files and unnecessary dependencies:

pamac remove -on manjaro-pulse

or

sudo pacman -Rns manjaro-pulse

I guess I should have referred to those notes before I posted, but it is also useful to have confirmation from another user that running the command to uninstall manjaro-pulse is actually required.

Awful sound quality - #11 by LordTermor
what inxi indicates as running two servers at once is not it is in fact. Inxi just shows that both pulseaudio and pipewire process are running. But it’s perfectly ok since pipewire process is not a sound server actually. It’s video server used by DE for dealing with screen recording and so. PipeWire’s sound server process is called pipewire-pulse.

I can also confirm, that this command works.

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pipewire
