Hi Guys, I know about the typical NVIDIA issues with a second monitor still I have never been able to fix this and things got even weirder…
I have a Manjaro instance running on my Tuxedo Polaris 15 laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 onboard. Never got it to work with a second monitor and tried all suggestions from this forum. Somehow xrandr doesn’t detect the HDMI monitor. Finally decided to give it up and start with a fresh install.
Got a pendrive ready with Manjaro on it. Booted for testing with the proprietary drivers. My second monitor became visible and future looked bright! Created a new partition on my harddisk and installed Manjaro from the pendrive. Booted again. Second monitor still there!! Yeeha! Needed to install the neccesary updates. Booted again. Black screen on both monitors…
did only an update on plasma-desktop and booted again. Manjaro was back again but only on my first monitor and xrandr doesn’t spot the monitor in HDMI again!
What the hell happened here?
Hi @PatrickJenner, and welcome!
Hell happened. Your laptop is obviously haunted. We just don’t know by what to perform the correct exorcism, so we need more information. To that end, please see:
- [HowTo] Provide System Information,
- [HowTo] post screenshots and links,
- [HowTo] Make support easier, and
- [HowTo] Use preformatting in a forum post.
Please also provide the output of:
mhwd --list
And
mhwd --listinstalled
Hope you manage!
Tip:
To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:
```
pasted text
```
This will just cause it to be rendered like this:
Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.
Instead of like this:
Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.
Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.
Please edit your post accordingly.
Thank you Spellmaster @Mirdarthos !

Now I hope to see some magic…
go to system settings/ compositor, uncheck enable on startup, click apply, reboot … youll probably need to reboot several times 4-5 …
What kinda Windows method is that?! Keep repeating the same solution over and over again until it works. I tried 5 times and not surprisingly got the same result everytime again. Unfortunately.
yes i was hoping disabling compositor would work like it did here
go to etc/x11 and what .conf file do you have there?
The compositor would be a good guess @brahma though I need the thing for my wobbly windows
As I mentioned before I am on an almost plain vanilla Manjaro installation. The only thing I did install and try is optimus-manager. Therefore my X11 contains:
00-keyboard.conf 10-optimus-manager.conf 30-touchpad.conf
I believe KDE no longer uses X11 configuration and so by default I have no xorg.conf
if it was the compositor, you could enable it with alt+shift+f12
when you boot into your desktop, thats what i have to do…
so if you using optimus, did you try booting only with intel and then only with nvidia drivers?
you are correct with the xorg.conf, but it can happen that it is still in the x11 folder, so thats why i asked you to check, just to be sure…
optimus never worked for me.
optimus-manager --switch nvidia ✔
ERROR: a GPU setup was initiated but Xorg post-start hook did not run.

If your login manager is GDM, make sure to follow those instructions:

If your display manager is neither GDM, SDDM nor LightDM, or if you don't use one, read the wiki:

Cannot execute command because of previous errors.
But eventually it is not optimus that is causing my problems. I installed it to help me out of it.
ok, so uninstall optimus … and also there was released a stable update, so you could update your system, reboot and check, maybe it will be fixed
Too easy! Too bloody easy! But it worked!!
Ran the updates. Reboot. Uninstalled optimus. Checked the X11 folder: 90-mhwd.conf that was deleted by optimus still gone but 10-optimus-manager.conf was gone too. Reboot.
Two working monitors!
My dear @brahma I owe you a beer. Thank you so much!
