Red curtain of death after battery died

I’m currently using an old Macbook Pro I had lying around while my laptop is in for repairs, and I went ahead and installed Manjaro on it. I’ve been using it for about a week now, but after I let my battery die, on boot I get a “red curtain of death”. I can get into grub by holding down esc, but not much else. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics driver (video-linux) in a chroot via the live CD to no avail. What should I do?

I’d provide a picture but I can’t embed images or provide a link for some reason.

Hi @Speak2Erase2, and welcome!

In order for us or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assitance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Hope you manage!

Oh, my bad.
I put my system info on my profile and wrongly assumed that was enough. Sorry.

Picture of the red curtain:
https://nowaffles.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/IMG_20220315_083058-scaled.jpg

Looks more like a hardware failure (heat problem?)… but well you can try different things.

Add this to the kernel parameter to disable certain driver features:

i915.enable_dc=0 i915.enable_fbc=0 i915.enable_psr=0 i915.mitigations=off

More info: modinfo i915

This would give more information:

journalctl --dmesg --boot -1
cat /var/log/Xorg.*.log

I don’t think it’s a hardware problem, since a live cd works fine…? Heat wouldn’t make much sense either since it happens right on startup. Although something of note is that the laptop heats up quite a lot when the red curtain shows up, so I might be wrong.
I’m sorry if I’m a little incompetent, I’m not very familiar with this part of Linux.

I’ll try out adding that to the kernel paramters (in grub I’m assuming) to see what happens.
I went ahead and got both of these out of the way since I was already in a chroot.

journalctl --dmesg --boot -1
This spat out a long log list that start all had dates from Mar 10th. After scrolling for a few minutes, the date never changed. I’m probably doing something wrong.

i915.enable_dc=0 i915.enable_fbc=0 i915.enable_psr=0 i915.mitigations=off
I tried adding this to grub right after the jargon that follows linux to no avail. I’m likely doing something wrong or completely misunderstood you. Sorry…

try a complete system-reset with command and R as described in the manuals and howto-s in the internet. this is a company’s related issue. i won’t comment further about why and how this happens, everyone can make up it’s mind about this company and i’m also an owner of an mac. once in my life, never again.

That is correct. It just shows all kernel messages from the previous recorded logs. You can see all records with: journalctl --list-boots

So if you start the macbook after Mar 10th and the problem occurs after that, then it happens during the initialization just before journal can record anything.

  1. Boot with a current Manjaro Install ISO
  2. open a terminal and chroot: manjaro-chroot -a
  3. install/reinstall a kernel: mhwd-kernel -i linux54 (or linux510)
  4. Add the options to /etc/default/grub and replace there:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="<existing parameter> i915.enable_dc=0 i915.enable_fbc=0 i915.enable_psr=0 i915.mitigations=off"
  1. update the grub boot menu (normally also triggered by mhwd-kernel): update-grub
  2. exit and reboot

It could be a problem of the newest LTS Kernel. Try an older one, since the driver is baked into the kernel.

I tried booting 5.15 after editing the grub config to no luck, but booting into 5.4 worked fine. Thank you so much!
When the time comes for me to upgrade Linux kernels, should I be worried about this persisting?

do a whole backup with something like clonezilla before updating and you’re always on the safe side. manjaro is rolling release so no backup, no mercy.

Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.

Could be that a new feature at the driver does not work well on your old iGPU. Yeah that could be a problem without determining which feature produces this bug.

Linux54 will be supported until Dec 2025: The Linux Kernel Archives - Releases

Ah, alright. It’s probably nothing to be worried about anyway since this is just a temporary setup for about a month or so.
