Post Update KDE goes black after login attempt and locks up fully

As said after a regular update I cannot login into KDE anymore. It instantly freezes into a black screen where I cannot switch to any other console.

I can however switch to a different console and login. From there I noticed I updated from Ker 6.6.128 to 6.6.137. Could not switch back due to most drivers not working including internet.

In GRUB I had 3 older snapshots youngest was just the day before with 6.6.128 and it worked flawlessly. So I thought it’s a kernel issue or perhaps a amdgpu driver issue in the new kernel update. Just to make sure installed kernel 6.1. and 6.12. so I could test and see which kernel is stabile for regular updates. Updated Grub and because I am quite new to linux used Timeshift to set this new snapshot as the default to run from.

Reboot: Worked fine, it picked up ker 6.12. and ran smoothly. Thought to myself ok time to update everything, reboot to make sure. Lo and behold, same issue again just now on 6.12.

That burned away one of my snapshots so I only have 2 left that work, and am at an end and am asking for assistance.

How can I figure out what is causing the issue?
How can I fix it?

PS: Running KDE plasma 6.5.6. right now kernel 6.6.128-1 (this one works), amdgpu (the version that comes with kernel) on a Ryzen 5700x with a Radeon RX570

Hi @AxelAlexson, and welcome!

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8 --color=0

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Those with privacy concerns: note that when -z, or --filter is used, all personally identifiable information is filtered out from the resulting inxi output. :eyes:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip for legibility: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as a general introduction for new forum users. Please take the time to follow links given and learn how to create effective support requests and encourage quality responses.

I suspect this will help find your cause:

Finding errors for specific boot

journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1

Where:

  • The --priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;
  • the --no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum; and
  • the --boot=-1 argument limits the output to log messages from the previous boot. This can be adjusted to -2 for the boot before that, -3 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth.

Mind you the: Inxi data is from this session that works. I am not sure how to copy and post the exact data from the one that does not, since Ihave no internet in that instance.

Thank you.

You are more than welcome!

Unfortunaly I do not see any problems. However, that doesn’t mean much, and I’m pretty sure someone else will. So I’d say just hang tight.

Hope you manage!

So, your first step now is to learn how to perform a rollback without losing a snapshot!
:footprints:
This is covered in the Timeshift manual.

After booting into a (writable) snapshot, it is absolutely essential that you create a new snapshot before you begin any experimenting.

You will find a wealth of useful information in the forum if you search for “Snapshot” or “Rollback.”

I don’t know what has happened - but there is something strange going on with Plasma using sddm.

Buildiso creates unusable ISOs after latest update - #13 by linux-aarhus

Now I cannot say that switching to plasma-login-manager will solve your specific issue - especially I don’t know the effect if you are using X11 - but I think it is worth a try.

When you have signed on to a TTY console run the following commands

sudo pacman -Syu plasma-login-manager
sudo systemctl enable plasmalogin --force
reboot
