Plasmashell crashing every 5 minutes

My install is fresh after a ssd died. It ran fine initially, now the panel disappears every 5-10 minutes and i have to restart plasmashell.
I run manjaro unstable, no plasmoids/widgets, not even a wallpaper.
Just 3 displays, 3 panels, very few apps (firefox, obsidian, spectacle, dolphin)
I disabled audio because i suspected a connection but it still crashes.
I also suspected the weather plugin because if shows up in the log so i removed it, but it still seems to be running in the background, i don’t know if this is normal.

I also use the proprietary nvidia drivers and while i don’t suspect them right now, they have caused issues in the past.
I just checked the nvidia-forum after the recent disaster with gtk apps freezing and could not find any issues about plasmashell crashing.

please post the output of the mandatory inxi-command to give us some basic infos.

Hi @schmolch,
In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8 --color=0

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Those with privacy concerns: note that when -z, or --filter is used, all personally identifiable information is filtered out from the resulting inxi output. :eyes:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip for legibility: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the te and welcome!xt you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly. And please refrain from posting pictures, especially pictures of text.

Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as a general introduction for new forum users. Please take the time to follow links given and learn how to create effective support requests and encourage quality responses.

can you post the output from

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE && glxinfo | grep server

to ensure that you’re on x-11/wayland and nvidia. it should be x-11 and nvidia in your case.

Which Renderer backend is kwin using? OpenGL or Vulkan?

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE && glxinfo | grep server
wayland
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
server glx extensions:

I think it’s caused by spectacle, because while conversing with you i have not used it and it didn’t crash since 20 minutes.
Now i made a couple of screenshots and once it crashed and several times it distorted / stretched the panel.

Which Renderer backend is kwin using? OpenGL or Vulkan?

How to check? I only know nvidia had issues with the vulkan renderer recently which caused the gtk-freezes.

okay your on wayland. can you check if the problems disappear when your on x-11 ? to do so you’ll need to check if switching is possible.
is the plasma-x11-session installed ? check with

pamac search plasma-x11-session

if not install it with

sudo pacman -S plasma-x11-session

after reboot you should have the option to switch between x-11 and wayland at the login. at login is a menu at the left, bottom corner of the login screen.

It should be on OpenGL. Vulkan is still heavily experimental.

It is set to automatic so i guess ill just leave it there.

So far no crashes on X11, despite excessive screenshotting.

can you check if envycontrol is installed ?

pamac search envycontrol

if not install it with

sudo pacman -S envycontrol

and check with envycontrol the gpu setting with

envycontrol -q

post the output

Crap, i just had a complete freeze, didn’t even do anything.
Mouse stopped moving, could not even disable numlock.
Waited 2 minutes then it dropped me to a tty but only for a few seconds then it was dead.
Damn, plz not dead hardware again.

What log do i look at please?

are there errors in dmesg ?

sudo dmesg
envycontrol -q
hybrid

I have a iGPU (ryzen) but it’s disabled in the bios.

well your actual setting is hybrid-mode, that should decide to switch between igpu and gpu. my guess, but it’s only a guess is that you deactivated the igpu but something in the os tries to use the amd-gpu. just a test: what happens if you reactivate the amd-igpu ?

The only thing i could find in the logs was a SYN_DROPPED for the razor mouse in xorg.0.log.

I had another crash when i tried to log out. After entering my password in sddm the cursor turned into an X and it was dead.

I gotta take a break for now.

Abandoned.
