Plasma - No sound on boot for a few minutes

Hey guys, installed manjaro a few days wanting to stop the distro-hopping that has cursed me the past 6 years of my linux journey. Everything worked out pretty nice, i have configured it to my liking, but I have one problem. Every time when the machine boots I will get no audio for around ~5 minutes, at which point the sound will automatically come back and work fine for the rest of the session, without any problems. There’s a lot of sound topics on the forums, but i dont think ive encountered this, its quite peculiar. Do we know what could cause this, or how we can fix it? Thanks.
(Im guessing i should provide logs, but i dont see a template anywhere, quite new to the forum site, so please let me know what i should provide, to help you guys out)

I dont know if there is any audio specific log/command so please let me know, so that i can post that too.

Hi @georglassen, and welcome!

You are guessing correctly. However, if you couldn’t fine the info, either

  • you actually didn’t look but said you did :wink: or
  • you were possibly logged out when you looked; or
  • you wear glasses, like me, but yours are damaged.

Whichever, though, in order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Heya,
Dont appreciate the comments, but thanks for reaching out. I was logged out when i was looking through the forums so i didnt see these links i guess.Updated my post to include as many logs mentioned in the howto post. Idk if there are any other logs specifically for audio (systemctl status pipewire shows everything to be good, thats the only command ive used in the past for audio problems).

When someone is trying to help you in their free time, those kind of comments are not really helpful nor encouraging to help you further…

The idea of the logs is that we want to narrow down your problem - we don’t know your computer, what configuration etc.

Said that, there is one audio-related issue in your log:

Have you tried to use another audio device? If not, please do and also use some other input sources (3.5mm, bluetooth…). Any changes?

Online scans for systems with Aveo Technology USB2.0 Camera audio device all seem to show similar warning about volume range of 8191

https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=4e5825fcd9&log=dmesg

[   19.245524] usb 1-1.1: 3:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x84
[ 19.293854] usb 1-1.1: Warning! Unlikely big volume range (=8191), cval->res is probably wrong.
[   19.293858] usb 1-1.1: [3] FU [Mic Capture Volume] ch = 1, val = 0/8191/1

Both USB audio devices are shown as using connected to bus 5 but devices are running at different speeds:

  • Aveo camera - USB rev: 2.0 speed: 480 Mb/sbus-ID: 5-1:2
  • Razer microphone - USB rev: 1.1 speed: 12 Mb/sbus-ID: 5-2:3

I suggest move one device to a different USB socket so they do not share the same bus
Use lsusb to check bus connections

If audio is still not working when system boots, I suggest reinitialise ALSA devices to default state

sudo alsactl inint

and check all PipeWire services for errors

systemctl -l --no-pager --user status pipewire.service pipewire-pulse.service wireplumber.service

Hey thanks for reaching out, Ill try that out and come back with the results.
Edit: tried it out but still doesnt work. From @nikgnomic’s comment i think it has smth to do with the cam.

Hey thanks for reaching out. The pipewire log command with systemctl doesnt show any warnings or error so I guess thats fine? i reinitialized alsa and connected the camera to the frontal usb port on the case. Ill see if that works and ill come back with the results. Thanks!

After I unplugged my camera the problems seems to be solved, which is quite sad cause i actually use that for some recordings. Though I bought it in the era of me using windows 7 years ago, so i guess its time to buy a new one! Thanks for the help guys ill stick with this fix for now!
