No sound on Acer Chromebook Spin 512 (R851TN)

sudo pacman -Syu on May 1 2025, No sound now on Acer Chromebook with only Manjaro installed and mrChrome bios. I had sound before this update and now nothing.

I am new to Manjaro and picked it because it was the only linux distro that had sound with this chromebook and now an update and Manjaro is now just like all the other linux distros.

I tried a few things suggested online but just like all the other linux distros nothing worked.

Has anyone else had this problem and did they find a fix?

m@m asound]$ cat cards
--- no soundcards ---

not sure why it says no soundcards seeing it worked yesterday,

[m@m conf.d]$ ls
10-rate-lav.conf      50-pulseaudio.conf
10-samplerate.conf    60-a52-encoder.conf
10-speexrate.conf     60-speex.conf
50-arcam-av-ctl.conf  60-upmix.conf
50-jack.conf          60-vdownmix.conf
50-oss.conf           98-usb-stream.conf
50-pipewire.conf      99-pipewire-default.conf

Even though it shows I have alsa it says "command not found when trying to reload alsa in terminal and amixer doesn’t look correct and no F6 to check speakers mute like it says to do, plus there are no ‘F’ keys on a chromebook.

I just do not know enough to try and fix this. Any help would be great.

Thank you

Moderator edit: Topic title edited to reflect Chromebook model via Developer Information for ChromeOS Devices

Hi @theyaz, and welcome!

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Those with privacy concerns: note that when -z, or --filter is used, all personally identifiable information is filtered out from the resulting inxi output. :eyes:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip for legibility: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as a general introduction for new forum users. Please take the time to follow links given and learn how to create effective support requests and encourage quality responses.

Your profile mentions that you are on the stable branch and there was no update yesterday, so I suspect an older update ran, or the latest one, that you didn’t update right away but only yesterday.

Either way, we’d still nee the information described above.

Good day
i also had trouble with my chromebook and sound under linux for a long time. but with a different system, but maybe it will help you. for me it works via pavucontrol, which you can install via add/remove software.

then set audio to pro audio under configuration.

the corresponding cards will then appear under output-devices. in my case it is the Pro 5, simply set yours as the default. you just have to try it out.

this has also worked for me with other distributions.

Thank you for idea, but my pavucontrol is saying I do not have sound cards even though I had sound just yesterday before the update, so I do not understand why they are not detecting it.

Thank you for telling us. It makes sense and I understand. Please then, at some stage, take the time to familiarize yourself with it.

Edit:

All the drivers get loaded and everything looks good, so I have no idea further. Perhaps someone else does. Sorry.

:sob:

Thanks I am working at it. I should have first familiarized with the rules and instructions than started this post, but for some reason I was hoping it was going to be a simple fix, although working with this chromebook it has never been a simple fix, so I apologize.

Thanks for answering so quickly. Hopefully someone will have had this problem and know what to do.

I have made some of your posts a little more tidy. No charge.

In future, you are expected to make an attempt.

```
Pasted command output here :point_left:
```

Really, it isn’t that difficult.

While still editing, placing the three “backticks” before and after the pasted commands should negate that error – in other words, ignore it. Cheers.

That’s good. Thank you for that.

Chromebooks are supposed to be simple, but I think it’s only from Chrome OS that that’d be the case.

Thank you

Has anyone gone through this before? and or have any ideas?
I went onto mrchromebox to see and they claim to have a work around but if you have max98357a and AVS (audio vender solution) which seems to be on this chromebook they say
“Caution: Using AVS on a device with max98357a will blow your speakers. You have been warned.”
I would have tried this but didn’t want to chance blowing my speakers and everything was working yesterday until the Manjaro update.

maybe you can undo the update with timeshift?
or check what was installed in the update and remove individual packages or downdate?
was the kernel updated, maybe you go back there, or go forward and update it to e.g. 6.14?
alternatively you could try switching to the testing branch, maybe the error is fixed there and gone.
just a collection of ideas, maybe it will help you :hugs:

Wow updated again and it works again. Thank you everyone.
