I’m running a Thinkpad X13 without issues. In less than the past week, 2 external MyPassport external HDDs have stopped any sort of response when I plug them in. The LED on them doesn’t come on. dmesg shows no log lines, journalctl -f shows nothing. Not sure if there’s somewhere else I should look.
It doesn’t seem like a cable or device issue because the LED comes on when I plug them into a Mac (though they can’t be read because they’re ext fs).
Has anyone else run into issues after some recent update?

Is it possible that the USB port is faulty? Because it sounds like your Thinkpad’s USB isn’t providing power.

I meant to mention that I tried 2 ports in the Thinkpad with the same result.
Some system information would be useful. Post the output from inxi -zv8

Did you try these ports with other USB devices? Just to eliminate it’s not the USB ports issue?

No problems with my external Seagate HDD’s here, which i connected last week.
Edit:
Blow inside your USB Connector, maybe there is some Dust?
Also try another USB Connector.
Optionally, you could try another Linux Kernel, we have several LTS Kernels available.

Did you try a different cable or did you try to “squeeze” the connector a bit?
I had a similar issue with a different USB device which stopped working as the connector seem to have some fitting issues.

To get an idea of what is going on, unplug the devices, open a terminal and run
sudo udevadm monitor
Then plug the device and watch the output
Sample of what to expect when attaching a storage device
$ sudo udevadm monitor
[sudo] password for fh:
monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
KERNEL - the kernel uevent

While I don’t think I’ve “solved” the issue, reading how it disappeared on my laptop (Data storage devices @ usb ports stopped working on one machine after today's bundled update … - #2 by nitja ) might “solve” it for you as well.

Well, reboot after upgrading the kernel.

Were the USB ports on the same side of the laptop?
If yes, try the other side.
USB ports on the same side/close to each other are often connected to the same controller and thereby fail together.
Besides that a restart as @megavolt suggested might work miracles.

I did an autoupdate (but not a kernel upgrade), shut it down overnight (albeit before the reboot), tried another device and also ran sudo udevadm monitor while plugging in the drive. And it works now! Not sure which suggestion fixed it Thanks everyone.
