Data storage devices @ usb ports stopped working on one machine after today's bundled update …

I’m running manjaro on 2 computers, a laptop and a desktop.
Due to a severe accident on last Christmas Eve (which smashed my pelvis: 2 months hospital and finally a 3 weeks rehab) I used my laptop exclusively in these last 3 weeks and all usb ports, external sticks, and disks worked perfectly.
When I returned home today both machines (the long unused desktop and the laptop) showed the pending update (300+ packages).
After the update the desktop works pretty well, but the laptop doesn’t see any external storage device anymore. (Tested all 3 usb ports, 2 sticks, and 1 2-TB-SSD - all working yesterday - and still at the desktop’s usb ports.)

Same device (stick) at 2 different ports (both work for other devices - tried e.g. a non-bluetooth-mouse’s adapter):

Any idea how let a file manager see external storage on the laptop again?

Shutting the laptop down and switching it on again after 5 minutes, the issue “magically” disappeared.
While I still wonder about the reason for its appearance (so I didn’t mark this as a “solution”) there’s no more urgency in this topic.

Edit: perhaps it’s been just an April fool hoax?

Bro, a kernel upgrade requires a reboot. After updating, your system was still running the old kernel in RAM while the matching kernel modules on the hard drive had already been replaced by the new ones. When you plugged in a USB storage device, the kernel detected the hardware, but was unable to load the required module, resulting in a kernel module version mismatch.

I’m pretty sure that I did reboot the machine immediately after the update and that only powering it off & on did the trick.

Not magic - one idea is that you have forgotten to restart the system after the system update - especially filesystems are very picky about this.

Oh well :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth: … on account of @megavolt’s last post in Multiple external HDDs not responding in the past week I remembered how to check seriously whether I really rebooted the machine (uptime in inxi, above post 1) and see that I indeed had forgotten that one when I updated both machines at the same time.
So I’ll mark @megavolt as the solver.
