Message saying that keyring did not get unlocked

I have begun receiving the following popup message on my Manjaro (Stable Branch, XFCE, running in a VM).

Unlock Login Keyring
Authentication required
The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer.
Password:

Some facts:

  • The only cause I can think of is the 2024-07-29 update (just from when it began to happen), and the 2024-08-08 update did not fix it.
  • I get it a couple of times a day.
  • It happens at random points. Sometimes I go away from the machine for a couple hours, and when I return it’s there.
  • I do not have automatic login enabled.
  • My browser is Firefox. I open it immediately upon starting my Manjaro without getting the keyring popup. When the popup does come, the browser has been used many times. Therefore, I have no reason to believe browser use is triggering the popup.

I found these posts on the forum, but they don’t seem to fit my situation exactly.

How can I go about fixing my issue (so I don’t get prompts for password)?

I am replying just in case anybody else runs into the same situation.

The cause of the popups was probably dead XMPP accounts. My guess is based on the following:

  • Of the four Manjaro VMs I use, only two have Gajim (an XMPP client app) installed and running.
  • Only those two VMs had the keyring popup issue.
  • The appearance of the popups roughly coincided with Gajim’s failure to log into certain XMPP accounts (all at pad7.de). (I suspect that servers for that domain just shut down one day.)
  • When I turned off those XMPP accounts in the app, the keyring popups also stopped appearing.

I don’t know enough about either XMPP or keyring to know whether it is expected behavior that when an XMPP client keeps trying to log into a dead server a keyring popup would turn up.
