Manjaro runs sluggish after update to kernel 5.10.2

After the latest update with the kernel 5.10.2-2-MANJARO, everything takes longer to load and the system chugs constantly. It appears like every time the OS hits my SSD for anything, it chugs for a second before loading whatever it needs. Switching to an older kernel such as 5.9 fixes the issue.

Anyone know what could cause this?

I’m running Manjaro with the Budgie DE, and and AMD RX570 graphics card with AMDGPU graphics drivers.

check fisrt post on stable with 5.10 kernels and amdpgu
you have to add amdgpu.dc=0 on boot kernel

Adding amdgpu.dc=0 in my boot kernel options did not fix the issue. I don’t think it’s a graphics driver issue.

Here is my output of inxi -Fazy when using the 5.10 kernel:

Okay, so there is this error with the new kernel that wasn’t there before. However, the amdgpu.dc=0 workaround does not fix it.

Hm. trusted memory zone (for encrypted vram)
I dont know if its related … but you can add boot option to check:

amdgpu.tmz=0

PS … I notice another difference with the newer kernel:

[ 2.667518] at24 0-0050: supply vcc not found, using dummy regulator
[ 2.668253] at24 0-0051: supply vcc not found, using dummy regulator
[ 2.668801] at24 0-0052: supply vcc not found, using dummy regulator
[ 2.673146] at24 0-0053: supply vcc not found, using dummy regulator

Which seems to have replaced common-often-cosmetic lines in the older kernel:

[ 2.690316] proc: Bad value for 'hidepid'
[ 2.746783] proc: Bad value for 'hidepid'
[ 2.871418] proc: Bad value for 'hidepid'
[ 11.420204] proc: Bad value for 'hidepid'

(see reference proc: Bad value for 'hidepid' · Issue #16896 · systemd/systemd · GitHub)

I have the exact same problem. I’m on Intel machine: both CPU and GPU. I don’t use NVIDIA dGPU.

5.10 is very uncomfortable to use.

The problem is not specific to UI oraz GPU. Even saving a file in LibreOffice Writer takes much more time. Desktop starts slower and I see the drive lighting up like crazy. I have a very good SSD, but sometimes it almost feels like it’s an old HDD. Even displaying a web page (gmail or YouTube) takes more time. The entire system is sluggish.

All the below logs are from 5.10.2-2.

For now, I’m on 5.9.

Exactly, like I mentioned before. It feels as if every time the system needs to hit my SSD for some reason, it chugs for a second. Very uncomfortable to use.

Please install glances, sort by I/O and show whole output.

I/O didn’t show anything, but strangely it reported that glances was using around 12-15% cpu in 5.10, when it was only using around 2-3% in 5.9.

Aha! I set my cpu-governer policy to schedutil and that fixed the issue. It was set to a profile called powersave that wasn’t there before.

Indeed! My governor also switched from schedutil (which I had on 5.9) to powersave. So I switched it back and now everything works smoothly.

Excellent  How did you change CPU governor? I know there is terminal command but wonder is there is any GUI setting I might have never stumbled upon.

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/cpupower-gui/

But since 5.9 kernel, you can change it with

cpufreq.default_governor=governor

as kernel boot parameter, so I don’t see the use of a whole GUI just for that.

Hi I got the same problem , so I was able to set the CPU correctly with cpupower but how I can make this setting permanent ?
@Signalrunner where did you set that string ?
thanks

In your bootloader. I assume that would be Grub if you haven’t change it.

So that would be editing /etc/default/grub, add that parameter to existing GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line, saving and rebuilding config with sudo update-grub.

As explained here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_parameters#GRUB

But remember, it only works from 5.9 onwards, not in the current LTS which still is 5.4 for example.

thanks, that was easy  yes I’m on 5.10

Is still on powersave at boot :frowning:

Probably something else is changing it again after entering the system and the “userland”. Maybe cpupower, or probably TLP? Disable or change config accordingly.
