Fans keep spinning for no apparent reason

Hello everyone. This is my first post, so sorry if I wrote it in the wrong section, but here we go.

CPU is always at about 5-15% and RAM is at 6-7GB (sometimes goes to 10 but rarely) out of 16GB. The problem is that my fans are spinning like hell.

I reduced this problem for a bit by disabling Indexing on my system, but the problem is back again. It happens even after boot when idle and I have no idea what to do. I tried a few things from the forum that I could find, but nothing seems to help.

All ideas are welcome.

Hi @m1ck0, and welcome!

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Hope you manage!

Tip:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

Please edit your post accordingly.

reboot and provide pic of ksysguard of the process table page
also provide logs:
journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager
try different kernels: 5.18, 5.10

Some questions to understand the issue.

  • Did you test this on another distro and/or Windows?

  • Did you test this by letting the computer sit in the BIOS screen, without booting into any OS?

  • Are there any configurations in the BIOS in regards to cooling / fan speeds?

  • Are you implying that even on idle the fans tend to run at full speed?

  • Are you connected to an external display and leave your laptop lid closed?

Looking at what you provided, it does appear that your CPU is sitting fairly warm for supposedly not doing much work. Usually this is a cooling issue (passive or active). For example, leaving your laptop lid closed, because you’re using an external display, is detrimental to heat dissipation.

  • Did you test this on another distro and/or, Windows?

No I did not. I never had anything beside Linux on this laptop

  • Did you test this by letting the computer sit in the BIOS screen, without booting into any OS?

Good idea, I did not. I will let you know as soon as I do it

  • Are there any configurations in the BIOS in regards to cooling / fan speeds?

I will check that, as I never tweaked BIOS

  • Are you implying that even on idle the fans tend to run at full speed?

Sometimes, yeah. Not always the full speed, but you can clearly hear them. They also tend to run at full speed with just Google Chrome open, even tho CPU is a 4-5% and RAM is at about 1-3GB

  • Are you connected to an external display and leave your laptop lid closed?

I am almost always connected to at least 1 external screen, but I never close down the lid, as it does affect temperature

Usually this is a cooling issue (passive or active)

This gave me an idea. I will buy a stand for the laptop with cooler, so that I can cool it from the outside, and then monitor the temperature.

Today I saw that CPU temp was at about 45-55 degrees after boot, which is a bit too high for a CPU that was just turned on.

you didnt post the screenshot from the process table page in ksysguard…
and also did you switched kernels?

UPDATE 1

I opened it up, and the fans were LOADED with dust, so I cleaned it out. It might be a reason they didn’t keep the temperature low so it was required of them to run fast more frequently. I am about to pull up an all-nighter so I’ll write another update in the morning after night of working with node modules (if you know what I mean xD).

I didn’t switch kernels yet. If the problem still exists I will definitely do that.

UPDATE 2

I just ran 5min test completely on the battery, without charging it while the test was running. Here is the screenshot

https://paste.pics/5bc446aca164e46f02c63352327cfc19

5 minutes on 100% and temps weren’t above 66 degrees, fans weren’t turning on like a tornado at all, in fact, I couldn’t even hear them. I also installed thermald, and it indeed reduced FPS for the sake of temperature at one point.

i wouldnt be worrying about your cpu being at 45 degrees. install xsensors if u want to monitor your all your temps and fan speed. keep it below 80 and everything will be gucci. and yes cleaning your fans also helps. i would do that before i started looking at software related issues.

45 degrees is not a problem. Problem is that the temp goes up to 55-60 after 5-10 min on idle. Fans keep spinning really fast and loud even on idle.

All should be okay now, we’ll see.

Also just a little personal take, i do love those laptop base coolers. I bought one from Amazon for like $10 or $15 and it lowered my temps by almost 20 degrees C. Barely uses any power. And is adjustable so my laptop sits up at a 45degree angle too. great value for less than $20. Just look for the ones with really good reviews.

I definitely will do that. I had a small one and it lowered temp for a few degrees, which is not that bad considering it was like 7-8 dollars. Will take a better one to see if it helps, but it probably will.

Really depends on the airflow, the fans, and where they are positioned in relation to where your laptop’s heatsink/heatpipes are located. I also prefer the metal coolers, since at least they can allow the heat to conduct and dissipate from the laptop’s chassis.

that is the actual one that i own. it has helped with my temps A LOT and it stays running 24/7.

The problem was solved by cleaning fans and installing cpufreq utility. Everything is smooth now.

I get high temps and fans spinning only on high loads. It never happened when idle or when I am working on a single project at the time.
