Fakeroot version 1.35 hangs even directly from bash, cant upgrade packages

I do have it installed, im not sure what I need to share but it is the latest version (fakeroot -v returns version 1.35). no matter what I run, whether a specific command or just fakeroot alone, nothing happens. Even Ctrl-C does not end the process.

I updated the core packages with pacman after a long break so I was expecting some issues, but after resolving all of those I only need to update the AUR packages such as google chrome.

I discovered this when attempting to update AUR packages kept hanging at the ‘Entering fakeroom environment’ message.

I don’t know what information to share to help debug, and fakeroot doesn’t seem to have a verbose option that could give me any details or error messages. Please let me know what is needed

followed by
sudo pacman -Syu
returns with:
there is nothing to do ?

AUR is unsupported but you can ask.
Be specific.
What do you do, how do you do it, what is the response?
(the command and all it’s output)

The hanging after “Entering fakeroot environment …” is very unlikely to be caused by fakeroot itself.

The community repo has been non-existent for some time.
This also probably means you have longstanding unhandled pacnews.
You can print them all with

pacdiff -o

(if you dont have it then you might need pacman-contrib package)

I read that selectively updating packages is a bad idea and that it is best to update them all at once, so I am doing so when asked.

This applies to the base system - basically everything that you can handle via pacman.
That is why you always run
pacman -Syu
to upgrade everything
and only then install something new with
pacman -S something_new

It’s different for AUR
It’s easier to spot problems when you are NOT doing it all at once
so you can assess what might have changed and what you actually need

As you can hopefully see, there are some problems:
