Clevo NS50AU Bluetooth and Wireless not working

Hi all! I am a long time debian user who recently discovered manjaro. I have not had so much problems before, but my current workplace supplier offered me ‘linux first’ laptops and I thought that was cool, so I ordered one main laptop and one ‘backup’. Both have a lot of issues on any linux distro, but in this topic I will focus on my ‘backup’ laptop which is a Clevo NS50AU that came preinstalled with Ubuntu 22.04.

When I booted it I noticed that bluetooth and wlan were not working, but since I had already seen some issues with my previous work laptop that had just given up its breath by being unable to resume from sleep I decided to see if it could be worked out by finding a specific kernel/driver configuration.

Unfortunately I haven’t had any luck with this approach and I am hoping that someone here can help me decide if this is something that can be sorted out eg by using an older kernel/distro or if there is actually a hardware problem with the network card, in which case I believe the warranty is still active.

I can use a wired network and I can use network over USB. I cannot detect or switch on bluetooth or wireless eg in settings on manjaro gnome/kde / ubuntu 18,22,24

I have tried installing the tuxedo drivers and also the entire distro, which had the same issues.

I will append some info below and will be immensely grateful for any help that you can provide!

Hi @kiwi1715, and welcome!

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

P.S.: If it doesn’t work in nay distro, double-check that it’s not disables in the BIOS/UEFI or maybe it’s turned off with the keyboard-shortcuts laptops allow you to do.

Also check airplane-mode:

Fn+F11

Thanks, I edited the post with additional information! Let me know if this is sufficient!

I have tried to switch off airplane mode with the fn and f11 buttons, though I suspect that some functions are broken, volume and brightness functions tend to work, others definitely dont and some only work after fiddling a bit. So it could be that airplane mode somehow is switched on from the beginning and then there is just no way to switch it off if there is no module that can understand the input, right?

I looked in BIOS, but I was not able to find any settings there for switching off wifi, it seems options are quite limited.

Best,
M

I believe I updated the original post according to the links you posted, can you confirm or let me know if something is missing?

You did. Humble apologies for not noticing sooner.

There is nothing to bed found in the inxi output regarding bluetooth and/or wireless/wlan, and it would’ve been there with the “driver” part N/A if it detected it but didn’t have a driver available for it.

The fact that it’s not being detected points to either a hardware fault, it being disabled in the BIOS/UEFI or (and I’m not :100: on this) it could be that Windows isn’t shut down properly if that is installed.

Thank you! No worries at all, I should have made a reply instead of a post with the update :slight_smile:

So I have a bit of a crazy theory, I got life back into my old laptop and I looked at what had happened before it fell asleep and did not wake up. The error messages are not identical and I do not want to pollute this thread with log prints from another latop, but there is an overlap when it comes to error messages from kernel that have to do with acpi.

I just remembered reading that the firmware updater that I think is included also in manjaro is a big recent development and I think on my old laptop I didnt have such critical issues before I moved from 22.04 to 24.04 ubuntu, but after making the upgrade I have had issues on even older versions, so if something happened, and it is not a hardware error, then maybe the firmware updater did something to my BIOS that wasn’t great. I noticed that on both laptops my BIOS looks different now, and I have not flashed my BIOS.

What do you think? Is there a way that I could make sure?

This is really just a last ditch before I hand it in for reparation, I think in the case of the new laptop I am prepared to conclude that it is indeed a hardware error.

Anyways, your advice is much appreciated! /M

I am unsure, to be honest. Maybe someone else has more of an idea, but I’m all out.

There is the ‘soft’ firmware, the part that is loaded with the kernel with some extra stuff to get some hardware to operate in linux-firmware that you probably have installed.

The laptop probably has some bios/uefi updates that can be done, but those are usually done manually by the user and I’ve never heard of a automatic BIOS/UEFI updater with a Linux distribution aimed at normal users.

The device seems fully supported: Clevo NS50AU 15.6-inch Linux Ultrabook | Laptopwithlinux.com
chip: Intel AX201 802.11AX dual-band 2.4 and 5.0 Ghz + Bluetooth V5.2

Not sure how to troubleshoot this further.
