All Icons are missing

I have followed the instructions posted in the following ticket: All desktop and menu icons missing.
I am having the exact same issue that he was going through.
I am very new to linux and I know there are things needed here to see what my system has but I am not sure what you need in this case.

Things I have done:

Update
Reboot
Clearing the cache (rm -rf ~/.cache/*)
Clearing the cache for the Icons (rm ~/.cache/icon-cache.kcache)
Added ibt=off to (rm ~/.cache/icon-cache.kcache)
Updated grub with ( sudo update-grub)
( sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux)
( sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300)
I did the last 2 because that was the solve for the other ticket.
I rebooted again and still have no icons in the taskbar, desktop, or the application launcher.

Hi @RUI_c, and welcome!

I donā€™t have any icons on my desktop. But it seems you didnā€™t try the obvious, and I havenā€™t read the other thread to know if youā€™ve tried this, so Iā€™ll just suggest it:

Right click on your desktop, there should be an Icons sub-menu for everything you need. As I said, I donā€™t have any so this is mine:

Thank you but that did not do anything for this issue.

Right click on desktop and choose Configure Desktop and Wallpaper...

In the settings for Wallpaper make sure Layout is set to Folder View

I apologize if the title is misleading.
I am missing all icons including my Desktop, Application launcher, System tray, and just anything that has an icon in general. I am even missing my clock and everything in that section as well.

I did, however, check this location you mentioned and it is in folder view.

Okay well I am not sure what happened but they are back.
Thank you for the suggestions!

Never mind, after a reboot they disappear again.
Interestingly enough though I have found what brings. (Even if only until reboot)
Right click on the desktop
Configure desktop and wallpaper
Add Image

After you click ā€œAdd Imageā€ you wait a second or 2 and the screens all go black and the icons come back. (Again, until reboot.)

Didnā€™t know if this information would help someone better at Linux than I am to try and help solve the issue.

create a new test user, log out, log in with it and see if it has the same issue

I have tested that and the icons are there until I hover over them.
Once I hover over them they disappear.
Even on my main account I can still click the links for the applications but the image for the icon is gone.

i think youre the third user with this exact issue after updating to 5.26.2 ā€¦ one solution was not installed the proper drivers, looks like thats not your case, second was downgrading plasma and the third just went away after some rebootsā€¦
you can check logs, maybe there will be some hint, but first do this:
kate /etc/environment
and add there this command:
QT_LOGGING_RULES='*=false'
this will disable useless logs, so that they are more readable, reboot and provide logs:
journalctl -b0 -p5 --no-pager

I have this exact same behavior after the last update. Will try to generate logging as indicated by the last post of this thread.

Update: this is the output of journalctl -b0 p5 --no-pager:

logging

I hope someone (@brahma maybe?) can give me some hints what is going on. If you need more info please let me know.

theres nothing there in the logs unfortunatelyā€¦
@ijskegel did you tried creating a test user and see if its affected too?

Yes, i have created a new test user. Performed a reboot. After first login with the new test user everything seems to be ok, but if I hover over an icon it disappears. After another reboot all icons are missing just as with the regular user.

I also notice font problems in some pop-up windows.

you can post output from:
inxi -G if you have the proper drivers, otherwise revert back if you have a timeshift backup, or downgrade only plasma:

you could also try switching to testing or even maybe unstable branch to see if its fixed thereā€¦

Thanks for your help. If only I had timeshift setup it would have saved me now. Lesson learned, if I get this problem fixed setting up timeshift will be the first thing Iā€™m going to do.

Iā€™m not at my laptop right now so can not provide the output of the inxi command. Iā€™ll try to do that tomorrow.

In the meantime Iā€™ll be reading the link about downgrading plasma.

Update: This is the output of the inxi -G command. I think I have the correct drivers installed, or would it be better to install the proprietary nvidia drivers i.o. the nouveau one?

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics
    driver: i915 v: kernel
Device-2: NVIDIA GF108M [GeForce GT 525M] driver: nouveau v: kernel
Device-3: Quanta Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_2HDM type: USB driver: uvcvideo
  Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.4 driver: X: loaded: modesetting
    dri: crocus,nouveau gpu: i915,nouveau resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
API: OpenGL v: 3.3 Mesa 22.2.1 renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 3000 (SNB
    GT2)

yes installing the proprietary drivers would be better, one user fixed his icon problem by installing the proper driversā€¦
but first add the ibt parameter to your kernel:
kate /etc/default/grub
and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes add this parameter:
ibt=off
dont remove anything from there!, just add it to existing parameters, save the file, update grub:
sudo update-grub

now install the proper drivers:
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

EDIT: you have the 390xx driver card, so do you have a optimus system?
post also output from:
mhwd -l -li

reboot and see if it helped

Note that my (very old) Dell laptop has a ā€˜optimusā€™ setup. In the past I installed bumblebee to get this setup working but since I do not use the machine for heavy graphics processing I decided that using only the internal (intel) graphics card was good enough.

Iā€™m not sure if I can simply install the nonfree driver or if I need to do something else/more.

Wat does the ibt=off kernel parameter do?

yes heres my edit:

so yes, you are probably better off using nouveau instead of the 390/bumblebee/optimus ā€¦ its a mess to set it upā€¦
there are issues with nvidia if the ibt paramter is not set, it disables something in intel cpu, dont remember exactly ā€¦

you can try this also:

Tried the ibt=off kernel parameter but that did not fix it.

Before I switch to testing or maybe downgrading plasma I want to check one other thing. If I perform the actions as mentioned by @RUI_c plasma seems to crash and restart, after the restart everything is alright (until reboot).

Maybe the crash indicates what is wrong/missing on the system at that time. I will dig into the log files to see if I can find something.

P.S. @RUI_c apologies for hijacking your thread. Did you find a solution yet?
