About installing nvidia driver black screen

Hi .I use manjaro Kde and when I try to install nvidia drivers, the reboot results in a black screen. I can get into tty3. This is my first time using linux. Can you tell me how to solve this problem? If you need more information, please let me know.

Now I am using the nouveau driver

Hi and welcome,

What do you mean by this?
As in - what steps do you take to install the nvidia drivers?

Hi @wenyang, and welcome!

Please format your post properly, including the title, as it currently means you are having trouble installing the nvidia black screen) which I don’t think is the problem. If english isn’t your native language, please mention it at the start of your post and add it to the correct language category.

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Install the nvidia driver using
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

Thank you. English is not my first language. I am using a translation software. It is very hard. If you have any more tips, please let me know.

I don’t know what your first language is, but there is also:

I do know that things can easily get lost in translation, especially electronic, or computer-based translation.

Could you please help me solve this problem? I tried again and wrote down the command.

nano blacklist-nouveau.conf

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

sudo pacman -Rsn xf86-video-nouveau
sudo mkinitcpio -P
reboot
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300
reboot

Cannot enter the desktop after startup.

Error:failed to start load kernel modules

Could try…

Without context and the results of the executed commands, there’s not much we can do.

We can’t know if this command succeeded, for example, and if not, what the errors were.

Once again, I don’t know your language so I don’t know if the instructions are in your language, but there are good instructions to be found in the Wiki:

But I’m :100: sure I don’t know your language.

这些命令没有报错 只是在我重启后发生了错误 错误是failed to start load kernel modules

So what Kernel are you using actually?

Please don’t post your system settings from your Live Boot.

Edit:
Maybe its the Plymouth bug, try deleting this both commands:
quiet splash from Grub in /etc/default/grub

And after saving the Grub file, don’t forget this command:
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Here is the Tutorial, but that info that i gave you should already be enough:

I suspect you’ll have more luck the chinese Languages section…because, I’m very sorry to say, I’m stumped and we’ve got a language barrier that’s not helping at all.

I used Kernel: 6.10.13-3 and the installation failed, so I switched to Kernel 6.6.54-2 but it still doesn’t work. I will try your solution. Thank you.

It’s okay. Thank you anyway.

I see you using Dual GPU for that you need a hybrid GPU driver… but i have no idea how to setup this.

Are you using X11 right now? Is this correct? You can switch at the Login Screen (bottom left) between Wayland and X11.

Your GT 730 is EOL (End of Live) also and only supported from 470.xxx Legacy drivers…
Its possible that nouveau gives you already the best way for your old GPU.

yes I use X11. Should I switch to Wayland? Maybe I should disable via Boot

Intel AlderLake-S GT1

No, when I run Rider, typing is very slow.

You can try disable your iGPU, but to be honest… im not sure if your iGPU (Alder Lake) is not faster as your nvidia GPU!?

X11 = good for nvidia
Wayland = good for amd/intel

But it depends on the program’s and the GPU Model, what you using.

I guess your old nvidia GT 730 works maybe better for X11…

Maybe it’s almost as fast. When I use firefox or programming software, I can feel that the mouse is obviously slow and the code is slow, so I want to try to install the nvidia driver

You may want to unplug and disable your nvidia card first?

Your iGPU is probably faster in single GPU mode and from there you have the freedom to choose between Wayland or X11, without a handicap.

You also save Power/watt if you not having a dedicated GPU connected.
And this old nvidia GPU’s are Power demanding… not so good for Laptop’s.

You may want to unplug and disable your nvidia card first?

Good idea, maybe I’ll try it.

I have a desktop, not a laptop.
