Videos sometimes freeze and only play frame by frame #2

Same issue as this one, different computer.

  • Manjaro XFCE
  • Firefox

All videos in firefox all of a sudden randomly stop playing. Press play again and the video plays one frame before freezing again.

Why are you running 5.4 on such a recent machine? (I.E. Have you tried different kernels already? 5.10 LTS and 5.14 Stable would be high on my list)

I was told on this forum to just go back to 5.4 twice, after trying out 5.10 LTS twice
and got into an argument twice over saying that LTS should mean LTS and not buggy, but was told twice that 5.10 isn’t really LTS and that I should stick with the true LTS, 5.4.

I don’t have 5.10 LTS running as the screensaver freezes the computer.

And I like having a Linux LTS version.

I found the second time where someone from linuxquestions.com told me to go back to 5.4.
Being at a later date, it was less pressing than the first time.



And then I asked if this is how it is, I did not any clear answer saying, “no 5.10 is now Manjaro’s main LTS” and you telling me I won’t get any better answer than that and that’s final.
So I took that as 5.4 being the real LTS and I’ll have to ride it out until 5.15 appears.

The x y problem again, it seems.

Regarding the kernels: All the kernels provided trough repository can be used, that means they are maintained and are not EOL. Even tho some kernels are newer and LTS that doesn’t mean will perform better on all hardware. There is no definitve answer on what kernel to use, but rather what works best for your hardware and your needs. Opinions will differ based on each one experience on their hardware/workflow and so on.

Regarding the video freeze: My guess is the video driver and or the way the kernel module is set. Based on the discussion here [SOLVED] i915 & Intel UHD 630 / Kernel & Hardware / Arch Linux Forums you might want to try this AUR package AUR (en) - linux-drm-tip-git if nothing else works. Somebody else, with the same iGPU has posted this J5005 / UHD 605 Graphics: 4k Youtube playback choppy / Multimedia and Games / Arch Linux Forums

Your mentioned topic, while might be describing same symptom, is about a desktop with AMD GPU … The only valid “workaround” mentioned there is to try with the compositor turned off.

Any apologies if I’m wrong, but I do not see how this applies to me.
My first reaction to this is: HOW!?

The XY problem is asking about your attempted solution rather than your actual problem.

I did not offer any attempt that I know. When I open up a video, it freezes.
Pressing play again is not an attempted solution of mine. It’s just a further description of the problem.

User doesn’t know how to do X, but thinks they can fumble their way to a solution if they can just manage to do Y.

What does this have to do with ANYTHING I posted on my opening post?
Where is my attempt!?
What’s my Y?

User doesn’t know how to do Y either.
User asks for help with Y.

What is my Y?
What is my asking for help with Y?

Others try to help user with Y, but are confused because Y seems like a strange problem to want to solve.

Fabby asked why I was using kernel 5.4 and why I would not use kernel 5.10?
That’s not helping me with Y.
I never asked about changing kernels and why I can’t change kernels is a completely different issue.

After much interaction and wasted time, it finally becomes clear that the user really wants help with X, and that Y wasn’t even a suitable solution for X.

Like I said, the symptoms are the same, but the computer is different. It doesn’t have an AMD GPU.

Anyway. It hasn’t happened in the last 27 days, so there must have been some update that has fixed this issue, or I’m just not triggering the issue somehow. And no, I did not upgrade my kernel. I’m still on 5.4.
