Update 05/05/2025: USB tethering not working

Greetings from Poland.
My equipment: FUJITSU LIFEBOOK E751
My system: Manjaro, Gnome 48, Wayland, Linux kernel 6.6.88-1-MANJARO
Problem:
Today I performed a system update. I restarted the system and saw that USB therating does not work. I always used a fast connection from my smartphone and now I only have slow WiFi.
Please help me fix the USB therating function.
Thank you for your help.

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the 3 dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --verbosity=8 --filter
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.
  1. Or we can try to play hide and seek
Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading  )

When connecting my Android phone
I get presented with a menu
from which I can choose USB tethering

I can also access this via other ways.

But I have to explicitly allow USB tethering, to share the Network connection of the phone with my laptop - it appears as a Ethernet connection in NetworkManager

It’s not automatic.
So:
check the steps you take to find what you might have missed

Hello.
I have always done as you write, but the update from 05.05.2025 causes it to no longer work.
That is why I am asking for help.

as nachlese says i would also say it is a wrong setting on the mobile phone. according to the info driver: usbfs, i would say it is mounted as filesystem.

But when I connect my phone, a window pops up and I can choose USB tethering.
Before the update, I did this, tethering turned on and I had a fast connection. And now I don’t have it. It doesn’t work.

did you do the same before running inxi?

Yes. I’ve been using Manjaro for over 6 years. I’ve always started USB tethering this way and it worked. After today’s update, it doesn’t work anymore.
I found a post on the GNOME 48 forum where they write that there is such a problem and suggest downgrading the kernel version, but I can’t paste that post here.
Downgrading the kernel is a bit abnormal.

i can’t test it myself right now to see if it works for me. but i also have the testing branch active and the 6.14 kernel installed.
maybe an upgrade to the 6.12 kernel will help you?

There is no better solution for now.
I’ll try to switch to kernel 6.12 LTS. I’ll write if it helped.

No need to do that.
Just use a different kernel.
You don’t have to use the most recent one.
There are several LTS versions available.

But you can.
Just format your post or the address as
“blockquote” or “preformatted text” (easily accessible from the top row of the edit window here)

It could be a problem with your phone …

open a terminal and have:
journalctl -f
running in it
the continuous live output will tell you what happens …

[type or paste code here](https://discourse.gnome.org/t/no-more-android-tethering-from-usb-6-14-2-kernel-issue/28395)

you mean this:

No more android tethering from usb (6.14.2 kernel issue) - Desktop - GNOME Discourse

I haven’t read it yet.

now I have read it

It doesn’t look pertinent.

Show journalctl -f
while you connect your phone
to see what happens vs. what you expect to happen

to have us see what your system sees when you are activating usb tethering on your phone

usb tethering has NEVER failed me, so far

journalctl -f  ✔

Kernel changed to 6.12: USB tethering doesn’t work.
I think the latest update is the problem.
There were a lot of updates before and tethering always worked.

More about this: USB tethering not working after updating to latest kernel (Page 2) / Newbie Corner / Arch Linux Forums

It will be fixed in kernel 6.14.6.

I have read this thread. I am not an IT expert. From this post I understand that I have to wait for a fix.
There is currently no kernel 6.14.6 in Manjaro.
For now, there will be no fast internet from the mobile phone.
Hmmm, it was nice to work at 300 Mb/s.
But maybe there’s a solution…

You can downgrade to a working kernel version. Note, that it does not help using the 6.1 or 6.12 lts versions. They received the same faulty patch.

Yes, I noticed that too. Following the advice of my colleague napcok, I downgraded the kernel to 5.15 LTS: USB tethering works fine.
I can say that the problem has been solved.
However, I think that going back to an older kernel is not a good solution.
There is a question: until when is support for 5.15 LTS?

Support for kernel 5.15 LTS is expected to end in December, 2026:
