Updated last night, the update didn’t show me any errors, but I can’t boot into my DE any more.
Spinner freezes eventually.
Also tried other options from advanced menu in grub, but with no luck.
Can someone help? Thanks!

Does your additional info mean you can succesfully boot into runlevel 3 or drop to TTY?
Or are you using chroot?
That said a first check might be making sure you are fully up to date:
sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syu
I’m using tty3
.
I ran that command but everything is up to date. Still get stuck with the frozen spinner

Seems ok …
Do you have untended pacnews?
pacdiff -o
/etc/shells.pacnew
/etc/default/grub.pacnew
/etc/pamac.conf.pacnew
/etc/ssh/sshd_config.pacnew
/etc/pacman.conf.pacnew
/etc/pam.d/sddm.pacnew
cscs
21 November 2023 23:18
8
All of them should be handled, but these may be directly related to your problem:
bassamanator:
/etc/pam.d/sddm.pacnew
bassamanator:
/etc/shells.pacnew
And this one probably means you dont have your mirrors correct:
bassamanator:
/etc/pacman.conf.pacnew
Without being able to interact with a graphical desktop it will be more difficult to compare the files … you wont be able to use something like meld
… unless you use a live environment and chroot in.
You can do it directly and tediously manually using nano
or micro
, etc.
Or if you are comfortable using things like vim -d
that will work swimmingly.
If you dont know what/why/how/etc of pacnews … the gist is you want to preserve important configs while merging new standards. Without the env var set you might use
DIFFPROG=meld pacdiff -s
(in a graphical environment that is … from tty … there are only so many console comparison tools, none of them super newbie-friendly)
Everything about pacnews/pacsaves:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman/Pacnew_and_Pacsave
PS.
To quickly go over some of the sample messages:
Just a warning … likely because a piece of firmware is signed badly. Nothing to do.
webcam. Not important, at least for now.
bluetooth is also not important for now. This has to do with vendor and device ID I think.
This is a message that can be ignored … it mainly tells me that watchdog is not properly disabled.
I’m a nano
user unfortunately. I’m a git
user though, does that help me?
Can I copy over these trouble .pacnew
files over to my laptop and run the diff?
I wonder if i can ‘roll back’? I have timeshift running, though I’ve never really put it to use

Sorry, I am the wrong one to ask about backups.
Though, I would guess that should work if available.
Other thoughts …
There are a few packages that might work for you: dotpac
in the AUR … or maybe etc-update
in the repos. But I have used neither.
Third-party utilities
A few third-party utilities providing various levels of automation for these tasks are available:
dotpac — Basic interactive script with ncurses-based text interface and helpful walkthrough. No merging or auto-merging features.
GitHub - AladW/dotpac || dotpac AUR
etc-update — Gentoo ’s utility, compatible with other distributions including Arch. It provides a simple CLI to view, merge and interactively edit changes. Trivial changes, such as comments, can be merged automatically.
Gentoo:Handbook:Parts/Portage/Tools#etc-update || etc-update
PS. I found this reply that seems to have an idea about using git
with pacnews…
no ! pacman no write in home, and you can run pacman -Fx "bashrc"
if you want changes of your .pacnew, you can create your git repo:
create repo
mkdir ~/.local/share/pacnew.git/
cd ~/.local/share/pacnew.git/; git init
#git push # in private repo if you want web diff
after all update, before merge, save change in local repo
cd ~/.local/share/pacnew.git/
cp -f $(find /etc -name "*.pacnew") ~/.local/share/pacnew.git/
git add -A
git commit -am "$(date) pacman update"
git push # in priv…
And yet another snippet from the fellow who wrote the merge feature in pacdiff:
MERGEPROG='git merge-file -p --diff3' pacdiff -s
But I honestly have no idea about that - I never use merge.
So I installed xfce from tty3
and am able to boot into it.
KDE is still broken it seems. Does this help my situation at all? Should I remove KDE and reinstall? I would hate to lose all my settings, widgets, etc.

Well, you may want to create a new user and see if a fresh profile let you boot into Plasma Desktop …

Ok so I created a new user and I’m able to log in to KDE just fine. I assume this means that KDE is just fine, and my main user bassam
is ‘broken’. Anyone to ‘repair’ user bassam
?

it simply means that you have some custom settings or plasmoids added which doesn’t work with the update. You can compare your home directories and config files to figure our what is broken. Mostly just some settings issue …

If you dont mind resetting things you can do (from affected user)
cd ~/.config && for j in plasma*; do mv -- "$j" "${j%}.bak"; done && rm Trolltech.conf && kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental && cd ~
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE#Configuration_related
Honestly I haven’t installed anything recently. I avoid AUR packages. I mostly use VSCode, dbeaver, anything basically that a frontend dev uses, no games, etc.
I just checked the journal and it has a lot more going on:

Well mostly it is in your .config
folders:
diff -Npur /home/user1/.config /home/user2/.config > changes.diff

I also added a new user via tty3. I managed to login as well. The old user is indeed broken with this update. After trying config diff, it doesn’t seem to show any major differences.

I’m curious to see how we can get ourselves out of this one.
At least it looks like we’re on the right track.

So I ended up doing it all from that section in the link:
$ for j in plasma*; do mv -- "$j" "${j%}.bak"; done
$ rm ~/.config/Trolltech.conf
$ kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental
$ rm -rf ~/.cache/*
Made no difference. One thing that I did notice when rebuilding the cache, not sure if it means anything:
. In any case, I did clear the .cache folder.
I guess there is a widget that is broken? Will keep at it.
Yes this one is a toughy. I’ve been using manjaro for 9-10 years now, can’t imagine my life without it. I do a fresh install every 4 years or so, the last install being about 1 year ago, don’t want to do it again so soon.
I wonder if you want to try rebuilding the cache from this link , note that it had no effect on my machine.
EDIT can you also post the output from journalctl -p3 -b-1
? Here’s what I’m getting, maybe there’s a pattern here.
