Trouble booting

Been using Manjaro nearly 5 years, and for the first time ever,
cannot get in, and am now using an earlier btrfs snapshot.

The last message on screen was “Finished TLP system startup/shutdown”.

Happens with kernels 5.10 and 5.4, also when booting fallback initramfs.

There were 3 warnings “proc: Bad value for ‘hidepid’”
but apparently this is not fatal, so not the cause of the hang.

The keyboard was alive –
Ctrl+Alt-Del caused proper shutdown and restart;
could get to a TTY (Ctrl+Alt+F2).

But when in the TTY, I could not remember anything useful to do there.
‘startx’ got an error and aborted; startkde does not exist.

What commands could I run to find the cause?

Or better still, if I mount the broken system’s btrfs subvolume,
what should I look for in there, e.g. in its logs, or in pacman files … ?

Thanks guys.

As I’m running an old snapshot now (and have work to do),
later on I’ll mount the broken subvol
and try chrooting into it to get info from logs and inxi.

Didn’t need to chroot, just looked in the mounted btrfs snapshot subvol.

Can’t run inxi that way; let me know if you really need it.
(Will have to swap system subvols again.)

Summary:
Boot-up seemed normal until it stopped at “Finished TLP system startup/shutdown”.
SDDM did not start.

Did not find any obvious clue in the system log.
The pacman log contains nothing at all from the time when I ran the upgrade.

Had some difficulties before upgrading :
My ffmpeg-libfdk_aac was blocking libvpx
so finally I removed it and installed standard ffmpeg.

Then I only downloaded, with ‘pacman -Suuw’. (my usual way of doing upgrades)

2.5 days later I ran the upgrade from TTY.
(First ran pacman -Syy and -Suuw again to make sure my download was current.)
The upgrade with ‘pacman -Suu’ seemed to proceed normally,
but now I see that NOTHING GOT WRITTEN in /var/log/pacman.log
All the earlier Syy and Suuw is there, but not the actual upgrade.

I’ve done upgrades from TTY before, and always looked in /var/log/pacman.log
after a successful reboot and login to KDE.
This is the first time an upgrade was not recorded there

Fini.

This is why I wanted the inxi

I think you are among the many that got kicked up to nvidia-495 at the same time nvidia dropped support for your card. So … just use mhwd to reinstall the 470xx series and remove the 495xx.
(from chroot I suppose)
I have a strong suspicion this is your issue. Example related thread:

Now I remember checking that out and thinking “my card’s OK if I just stay on 470”.
Didn’t realize Manjaro was going to push me onto 495 without me asking for it.

Thanks.

Me neither. It really isnt an issue with anything other than the nvidia (which manjaro keeps multiple versions around as a niceity) … and I am not sure that was always the behavior … but it seemed to happen last update. Again, along with a bunch of cards being dropped by nvidia - so here we are with those threads I keep repeating myself in
Obviously, regardless of the automation, the listing of available or compatible cards with 495xx (mhwd db) probably needs some fixing up.

Of course - let us know if we actually found the culprit in your case

You did. Thanks.
Using nouveau now.

Why the logs were not complete:
I was looking at a snapshot taken just BEFORE the upgrade !
( It was a very hot day.  )

The correct system log has a clear message :
“The NVIDIA Quadro K2000 GPU installed in this system is supported through the NVIDIA 470.xx Legacy drivers. … The 495.44 NVIDIA driver will ignore this GPU.”
