Another testing branch update with some interesting updates for you!

  • Some more KDE-git and Deepin package updates
  • We fixed a regression within Xorg-Server crashing some systems, especially Gnome-based
  • File conflict with dunstify got fixed
  • Firefox got updated to 80.0.1 and 81-beta4
  • Gambas 3.15 saw it’s first point-release

PAM and PAMBASE got updated, which might prevent you from login

Due to updates from pambase and pam you might take care about any .pacnew files in /etc/pam.d as for example pam_tally, pam_tally2 and pam_cracklib got deprecated. Read in the ArchWiki about managing those files.

Typical issue:

For recovery, it is enough to boot with kernel option “systemd.unit=rescue.target”, then proceed into /etc/pam.d and merge “system-auth” and “system-auth.pacnew”

Older Issues

System takes a long time to boot

If you’ve got errors like Failed to start Network Manager Wait Online. you can try removing systemd from passwd and group in /etc/nsswitch.conf as described here
Update: If you can see the line
dbus-daemon[1453]: [system] Connection has not authenticated soon enough, closing it (auth_timeout=30000ms, elapsed: 45146ms)
in in your dbus log ( journalctl -b -u dbus ), the new/better workaround is to switch cups from service to socket as described here:
systemctl disable org.cups.cupsd.service
systemctl enable org.cups.cupsd.socket

I think I’ve some font problems

With the update of fontconfig some major rules how fonts get applied changed. Make sure that your system has ttf-dejavu installed. A more in depth explanation can be found here.

Gnome-shell-extension-pop-shell is currently incompatible with wayland

… and causes the system to freeze when the first window is tiled and can render it unbootable. Solution is a hard reset and disabling either pop shell or wayland. If the system becomes unbootable, use a live USB to edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf to disable wayland and reboot.

I still can’t boot my system with nvidia-450, screen keeps black.
booting to cli works, and nvidia-smi, too, but startx will lead to the same black screen.
Can’t switch (back) to cli, when in this kind of blackscreen.

With nvidia-440 everything works fine.

I’ve even already reinstalled Manjaro. Won’t solve this problem, either.

Update went through no issues, I keep getting an error message at the end of the update about failed transaction but its because of vmware not being compatible with kernel 5.8 so I just ignore it

No more errors related to pam_systemd_home, nice.

Thanks! After updating Xorg Server, I no longer have crash after unlock on xfce.

EDIT: I went to my system regional settings and something is fishy, like no language appear to be installed at all, same in the detailed settings. YOLO, I reboot and check back lol.

EDIT 2: After reboot same situation I have no longer any language installed when I look into Regional Setting in KDE. I then added back French and English language to the system… Really weird as the system after reboot was still in French everywhere. Not sure what’s going on, but reinstalling manually locales from KDE System Settings seems to make the previously installed locales show again properly there.

I’m tempted to restore a backup to investigate and see if I can reproduce the issue (or if the issue wasn’t there before but I doubt it). Will wait for others to report here first, maybe I’m not alone seeing these message and weirdness.

I still cannot use VirtualBox on kernel 5.8 and native nvidia drivers. Whatever OS my guest is (macos, Windows, plan9, arch) my system still freezes completely.

No issues on the laptop with hybrid Intel drivers.

Did you by any chance replace your locale.gen with a locale.gen.pacnew?

I don’t believe so, I know I merged some new addition some time ago but not last update I don’t think so. Anyway I manually do that and don’t blindly replace config files.

in the last update i had to merge locale.gen.pacnew. did you check whether you had to merge.

and those sysctl messages have been appearing every time systemd had an update so thats normal.

All fine here: XFCE + BTRFS + linux57 :slight_smile:
xorg-server work as expected :+1:
In the next updates use linux54 because of vmware workstation :smirk:

Not really sure what happened, it is possible I made a mistake when the update to locale.gen happened the other day (2+ weeks ago?), not sure. I may have applied the changes manually, then selected the wrong option in paccdiff, it is still possible.

During the update of brltty I got this:
Please add your user to the brlapi group.
How do I do that/is it necessary?
edit: its a braille display driver so I’m probably not using it anyway
