Stuck in fsck after update

I updated my PC this morning and received a notification about breaking dependencies associated with nVidia drivers. Not thinking much of it, I proceed with the update and rebooted as required.

After a reboot, I am stuck in the fsck screen with this language:

/dev/sda2: clean, 817617/122077184 files, 266143590/488300696 blocks

Having searched the forums and another website, I have:

-Checked for updates in GRUB as (here

-Tried changing the runlevel, like here

Earlier today I did manage to get it to boot in such a way that it provided EE error codes, which as I recall were associated with an nVidia device not detected. I’m unsure of how to replicate results.

At this time, I am unsure how to proceed past fsck.

Hi @kellick,

It seems you,ll have to chroot into you install from a live USB and check/reinstall Nvidia drivers and/or provide other logs.

  1. Boot into a Manjaro live ISO.
  2. Open a terminal and run:
manjaro-chroot -a

You should now be logged in as root on your actual installation, so be careful because any changes can and will persist.

From the chroot environment, run the following and provide the output here:

mhwd-kernel --listinstalled

Also

mhwd-kernel --list

And

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

And

mhwd --list

And finally

mhwd --listhardware

Also see [HowTo] Provide System Information and, if applicable, [HowTo] post screenshots and links.

Edit:

I don’t think I’ll be the one that provides assistance, I’ve to be off soon, but the info would be necessary for anyone trying to help.

Thanks, I’ll be sure to check the good information posts (I admit I struggled to find them amid some panic).

Let this be a lesson to start reading the errors and the update announcements before updating. Kernel 5.13 is EOL. And has been for some time. You’ll have to install another one:

In the chroot environment, run the following to install kernel 5.15:

mhwd-kernel --install linux515

Followed by rebooting, hammering the Esc frrom the BIOS splash screen until the GRUB boot loader screen appears.

On the screen navigate to the Advanced… option, and press Enter to enter the menu. On the screen, navigate to kernel 5.15, and press Enter when on it to boot using that kernel.

You should now be able to use your computer, but don’t. First open a terminal and remove the old kernel:

sudo mhwd-kernel --remove linux513

And reboot again. Then synchronise your system again:

pamac upgrade --enable-downgrade

I’ve run the install command as specified, and have rebooted the computer.

However, I’m unsure in my situation how to get to the GRUB bootloader. Is that the GNU GRUB command line interface? If it is, it’s at version 2.06~1~ and only has the command line, not advanced options showing kernel 5.15.

Then how do I get to desktop after that menu? Do I have to enter commands in GRUB or the Edit mode?

After implementing some of Mirdarthos’s recommendations, I reentered a live boot ISO to use chroot again and try to gain some information.

To that end, when I ran manjaro-chroot -a, I received this output (I am unsure if this relates to my difficulty booting to my Manjaro installation):

grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdd1. Check your device.map.
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdd1. Check your device.map.
==> Mounting (ManjaroLinux) [/dev/sda2]

 --> mount: [/mnt/boot/efi]

Additionally, having run the commands within chroot to update to kernel 5.15, I re-ran

To that end, it doesn’t appear I finalized my Kernel 5.15 installation, and I am stuck at how to follow the specified commands to boot where indicated.

Please excuse me if I’m completely wrong here. I’ve been a Manjaro user for 2 years but I’m not an expert.

Can you not do nomodeset at boot to get into the system and then do the driver installation fix once you are in? I’ve done things like this before.

Sorry if this is a useless suggestion. Hope it’s not though.

That’s ok! I’m not sure what the nomodeset command is. And, at this point, I’m more concerned with getting my installation to the right kernel than attending to drivers.

I am not able to complete boot into my desktop, so I would have to run the commands with chroot or GRUB within the live ISO.

Hi kellick,

just had the same problem, and solved it this way:

  1. Install linux515 in a chroot environment as mentioned before
  2. Additionally, install linux515-nvidia
  3. Reboot and make sure to boot Kernel 5.15

Problem is, the nvidia-package for Kernel 5.13 (linux513-nvidia) does not exist the Manjaro repository.

Hope this helps.

If you can still chroot as Mirdarthos explained, enter in and rerun mhwd-kernel --install linux515 and post the output here. Also take @Frawo 's advice and install linux515-nvidia. Then reboot, and remove the USB for the live iso, and hit Esc a bunch as as soon as your computer turns on until a menu appears (there may be a menu in between rebooting and grub, just hit enter on grub). There should be an option marked something like Boot to 5.15 in either that screen or an Advanced screen. Navigate with arrow keys and press enter on that.

If you do this, and see the fsck message you got earlier without getting into your system, hit Esc again and take a picture of the output if something appears (might be [ OK ] a bunch of times with words trailing).

If you have any questions, error codes, etc. please post & ask.

Good Luck!

There have been some spectacular replies to this thread, however I have moved forward with a clean re-install (largely out of my own frustration). Thank you very much though for the support!

I hope you downloaded the latest version of the installation medium. The one you had installed has an end-of-life (unsupported) kernel, which was probably causing your problems with nvidia.

Tip: When pasting terminal output on Discourse forums, one can either…

  • Use the Preformatted text </> toolbar button–NOT the Quote " button.

  • Add three backticks ` above and below the text (Markdown):

    ```
    type or paste code here
    ```

  • Use HTML:

    <pre><code>
    type or paste code here
    </pre></code>

I’ve done it for you this time. :wink:

P.S. Where in Tarnation did the 12 on every line come from? :thinking:

I’ll make it a point to reference back to this whenever I need to post terminal output, thank you!
