[Stable Update] 2020-12-30 - Kernels, KDE, Cinnamon, LibreOffice, Python 3.9, Mesa 20.3.1

Thank you for the quick answer.

Unfortunately I’m already running the 5.10 kernel. Must be something else then.

Tony

Seems so, could post output of:

systemctl status lightdm > when failed to start
mhwd-kernel -li > List installed kernels

Best regards
Philip

Hi
Thank you for your help

systemctl status lightdm
outputs:

Manjaro Linux 5.10.2-2-MANJARO (fe-tchavei) (tty3)

sudo systemctl status lightdm.service

mhwd-kernel -li
outputs:

Currently running: 5.10.2-2-MANJARO (linux510)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux510
   * linux54

Thx

Tony

Strange had the exact same issue with 5.9 but not with 5.10

Same result with 5.4? @tchavei

Just rebooted into 5.4… Surprisingly booted without any issues. Seems it’s somehow related to 5.10.2

Since I only reboot like once a month, I can live with the manual lighdm.service restart but it’s awkward.

Thx

Tony

I read about a lot of people having troubles with the latest stable update. Since I didn’t have the time to install it:
Is it advised to wait for another week/month/whatever because this update somehow will made easier or will it keep this way and I have to do it anyway?
I’d rather be thankful if I could avoid unnecessary difficulties (I still wake up screaming when I remember the latest Nvidia updates I did recently…)

I had the same issue after update, video-nvidia-450xx driver (the most recent available for my GPU - GeForce 1060) disappeared after update (so I had the same “After Update” as in your image) and I could not find any way to fix this, I tried a lot of things from this topic, compiling the driver on my own by following the instructions listed in the pinned post, etc. but nothing worked.

I then performed a clean installed from the newest manjaro iso published yesterday (manjaro-xfce-20.2.1-210103-linux59.iso), installed kernel 5.4, and compiled on my computer the 450 driver (I had to remove two nvidia packages which created conflicts in order to be able to compile without errors), and now it works: I’m finally able to run linux 5.4 with video-nvidia-450xx driver.

Edit: In order to ignore nvidia driver updates and to keep the 450 driver I installed myself, I added the line IgnorePkg = lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia mhwd-nvidia opencl-nvidia in file /etc/pacman.conf.

Later on I’m gonna try to switch to linux 5.10 and compile drivers again for that kernel, but I’ll wait for it to be flagged LTS first.

The problem in question is solved by reinstalling the mhwd-db package, so no need for manual compilation.

If you really need access to your data you could create a Mint/Ubuntu/whatever stick and try to boot from that. This should at least give you the possibility to copy your data etc.

Am wondering the exact same thing. Installed manjaro on my work computer and do not have time to troubleshoot this for the next couple of days. Seeing all the posts, it seems I will run into trouble with my hybrid intel/nvidia card on lenovo thinkpad p1… Love the work put into manjaro and probably difficult to troubleshoot the current update, especially for noobs. I just want to point out that this is not a manjaro thing and can happen with any kernel upgrades, I had also drivers breakage on linux mint… therefore always backup critical data!

Edits: also wondering if I would just save time by downloading the new iso and slap it on my thinkpad. I have fiddled with this hybrid drivers for a while and generally it is painful…

After updating this a.m., I completely lost wi-fi. After researching several pages on and off the forum and wiki , I finally resolved the issue by replacing broadcom-wl with the broadcom-wl-dkms package, which also required confirmation that the headers had been updated. Thanks to these forum posts for guidance:

That’s what I did, but it also has been a nightmare since permissions are messed up as well… I’m halfway the recover process since it’s taking a bit longer than I’d like to but at least my data is there.

I see people had luck booting other kernels, I tried 5.8 and 5.9 and same issue for me.

Was wondering about kernels. Can I install 5.4 lts before it runs the updates? Its been a while I have used manjaro and read somewhere that pamac does updates before new installs to avoid package breakage. But not 100% sure…

Use sudo mkinitcpio -P for rebuilding all initramfs images.
As for the other hooks that were scheduled after that and were missed - those could pose a problem…

Well, I also did this update yesterday evening. Until now I had about 8-10 crashes of X. Either resulting in a kill of my login session, or freezing of the X session. When it does freeze I can get back to login (lightdm) with SysRQ + REI (no SUB neededd)

And I start to believe there’s a pattern, theres always some DRM stuff in the first place, when X crashes.
Theres always some DRM stuff, followed by a coredump with some warning. In the log from
journalctl --system I was directly droped out of my session to lightdm (no manuall REI was needed)

If already searched the thread for some similar incidents but couldn’t find any.

Hey PalmettoPenguin, thank your for posting a solution. I have the same problem, but I don’t understand what you did exactly. Only installing “broadcom-wl-dkms” doesn’t solve it for me.

What do you mean by “confirmation that the headers had been updated”? Do I need to run this command sudo pacman -S $(pacman -Qsq "^linux" | grep "^linux[0-9]*[-rt]*$" | awk '{print $1"-headers"}' ORS=' ') ? I have no idea what that command does.

Thank you!

I did! But didn’t pay attention to stuff I don’t use … like Python  Didn’t click that it’s dependency for other stuff. Like dependency for dependency for protontricks and probably also for Steam (weirdly steam doesn’t mark it as dependency, but fails to do stuff without it or it being broken/missing). In the end the thing I had to reinstall was python-vdf (dependency for protontricks; also in AUR, and reinstalling protontricks didn’t auto reinstall this piece.). Anyway now everything works and got Horizon Zero Dawn also to run … great success!

Jaspa - I had exactly the same problem at first. Installing the -dkms package didn’t enable wifi, and I tried to get it working by re-installing broadcom-wl - without success. However, I eventually came across the post from r4jk3 - which included the direction to update the headers. Their post included the command language you quoted in your question.

So, I updated the headers first, re-installed the -dkms package (which automatically removes the broadcom-wl package as conflicting), and then, after the second installation of broadcom-wl-dkms, it worked.

I actually found those directions for updating the headers in Manjaro much easier to follow:

https://linuxconfig.org/manjaro-linux-kernel-headers-installation

I hope this helps. Frankly, I had a lot of trial and error before wifi worked again. For me, it looks like updating the headers before installing the -dkms package was the key.
