Sound card profile off after recent update - no sound at all

I’ve been running Manjaro with this setup and sound card for two or three years. My machine updated the OS (I assume–there was a new desktop image) and I’ve had no sound since. I’ve spent some time trying a few things and searching for answers (but without any real expertise to help me out). I discovered that my sound card has a chipset with iffy support, or it was in the last thread I saw discussing it, which I think was from 2021.

I couldn’t find a list of commands / info needed here in the audio section, so here’s what I’ve worked out that should get us started.

inxi shows pipewire and wireplumber status: off

Server-2: PipeWire v: 1.0.7 status: off with: wireplumber status: off
    tools: pw-cli,wpctl

This looks similar to a report from another user - My sound output and input are not showing

I suggest delete PipeWire configuration files in user home folder

rm -r ~/.config/pipewire/*

Reboot system and check inxi -Aa
If PipeWire and wireplumber are still shown as off rather than active, check services for errors

systemctl --user status pipewire wireplumber

@nikgnomic, thank you.

No audio yet. Here’s the output you suggested I generate.

Hi @phid,
Welcome to the forum, I also read the post but the problem was solve with an additional action:
I already fix this issue by delete configs from in /etc/pipewire and ~/.config/pipewire

Maybe, you could try again.

Regards,

@j8a, I’m sorry, I don’t follow. I did followed the commands nikgnomic gave me. I’m not sure which commands you’re suggesting I try. Help?

Thanks!

Hi @phid.
I look for the files installed in /etc/pipewire but all the directories were empty because I use pulseaudio. Please, check whether there are any configuration in there. Otherwise I consider not useful to run the first command below.

The terminal commands are the following:

sudo rm -rf /etc/pipewire/*

and

rm -rf ~/.config/pipewire/*

Then, reboot.

Hope it helps,

Regards

@J8a,

I’m recording results here before rebooting. They are as follows:

sudo rm -rf /etc/pipewire/*
(asked for password, nothing further)

rm -rf ~/.config/pipewire/*

zsh: no matches found: /home/diana/.config/pipewire/*

Got “not matches found” for that the first time I tried it, too, for what it’s worth.

Ok. Going to reboot now…

EDIT: Rebooted. No change. Still no audio.

If there’s any additional or refreshed information that would help troubleshoot the issue, please let me know.

I suggest check all 3 services for errors

systemctl --user -l status pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber

and check audio devices detected in PipeWire

Thank you again for any thoughts and suggestions.

I also have a Creative AE-5 soundcard, i had a KDE Bug in the past that doesn’t recognised my soundcard (it was running for a full year without problem’s) under KDE Pavucontrol und my soundcard was muted after i played with the settings again. I also created a topic about my problem (unsolved).

So I rolled my system back with timeshift because i couldn’t get any sound after i switching between the sound card settings.

Since then, i evaded to switch in pavucontrol any settings besides Volume adjustment.

And after a while i saw that Pavucontrol only really detects my Creative Sound Card when i Powered my Monitor Off and On (while no application was open).

You will see a name change from your AE-5 Soundcard after you Power On your Monitor again, if this stuff really do something i can’t tell, i just evaded this problem, but i always remember the Pandora’s Box that i openend at this day… i just got lucky that i could closed it again

I can’t tell how long the Monitor must be powered off… i normally switched him off when i leaving my home… so possible several minutes, but its also possible just a few secs are enough? I dont know…

I hope this information can help…

pipewire.service should not be enabled, because it is triggered by pipewire.socket

● pipewire.service - PipeWire Multimedia Service

I suggest disable pipewire.service

systemctl --user disable pipewire.service

pipewire-pulse.service is disabled, as expected because it is triggered by pipewire-pulse.socket

wireplumber.service is enabled, as expected because it does not have a socket

@nikgnomic

You’re right about the HDMI to my monitor. I had the sound turned down because I generally use the sound card exclusively. It works. Nothing from the sound card yet, though.

systemctl --user disable pipewire.service

user/sockets.target.wants/pipewire.socket'.
Removed '/home/diana/.config/systemd/user/default.target.wants/pipewire.service'.
Disabling 'pipewire.service', but its triggering units are still active:
pipewire.socket

Does this matter, that the triggering units are still active?

Thanks.

The triggering unit pipewire.socket should be enabled and active to control *

I suggest check ALSA mixer settings for Creative card (card 1)

alsamixer -c1

Output sinks would show as not available in PipeWire if the ALSA card outputs are muted [MM]
but Creative cards have other controls that could prevent audio playback
e.g. IEC958 Default PCM should be turned off for analog audio playback or on to play audio via SPDIF output

alsamixer -c1 screenshot (will the forum let me post it?)

I’m trying to follow and understand and learn but the entire Linux sound architecture is a mystery to me, as is what a socket is and what pipewire does and why, etc. Some of your explanations I can understand; most are over my head. I appreciate your help very much, but stuff like " e.g. IEC958 Default PCM should be turned off for analog audio playback or on to play audio via SPDIF output" doesn’t mean anything to me.

I’ve been looking for a good tutorial on it, perhaps a diagram explaining what each layer does, basically, and why it’s there. I haven’t found that yet. Not sure it exists.

Cheers.

EDIT TO ADD: I turned PCM off an experiment. No change. No audio either way.

Please post more information about ALSA playback devices and mixer controls in text format

aplay -l; amixer -c1

I’ve been looking for a good tutorial on it

For the audio card there is no user manual, only a quick-start guide
Creative Worldwide Support - Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus

For ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture - ArchWiki
For PipeWire - PipeWire - ArchWiki

I turned PCM off an experiment. No change. No audio either way

I suggest set PCM level control to maximum so it cannot affect audio levels for analog outputs for Headphone or Front (Speakers)

@nikgnomic

Thanks again for your suggestions.

ALSA data confirms this is an Audigy FX card that does not have many of the features usually found on other Creative cards
Sound Blaster Audigy Fx/5/Rx : Comparison Chart shows card uses a Realtek ALC898 chipset instead of Creative’s Audigy 5 / Rx chipset
and there are no digital outputs (IEC958 / SPDIF / TOSLINK ) only analog outputs via 3.5mm jack sockets

If the audio profiles in pipewire-pulse always appear as not available it is likely that jack-detection is not working correctly on this device

I suggest install package alsa-tools and use hdajacksensetest to test jack-detection

sudo hdajacksensetest --card=1

If the response for that test is always present = No (even if a jack is plugged in) jack-detection can be disabled using hdajackretask tool

If jack-detection is disabled, pipewire-pulse profiles will be shown as unknown availability. KDE GUI controls should not hide these profiles and pipewire-pulse will not try to avoid using these profiles

sudo hdajacksensetest --card=1

renders:

No pins found for card 1 codec 0, did you pick the right one?

And that is all.

EDIT TO ADD: I carefully cleaned my computer today and reseated the sound card. Same result. Does this indicate a dead sound card then? Thanks!

When I show all, it shows it’s present but not when I check to see if the card sees it.
