Some apps start with delay

Note: prior to starting this text, I found (and read) Apps starts with delay after login.

It appears as a bit annoying that (even) some small apps like nautilus and gnome-text-editor appear only up to two seconds after selecting it (via trackpad). Well, today I recognize the small coloured circle that indicated business, so when I had seen this earlier, I’d know that the system is responding. Nevertheless…

Nautilus, invoked from the commandline, takes also up to two seconds to come up. When I close Nautilus, the prompt is not immediately visible - it reappears after 10-13 seconds. Within this time, when I start Nautilus from the application bar on the screen’s bottom, it appears immediately. When that time has passed, then it takes 1-2 seconds.

BTW: Nautilus from the commandline also says:

** Message: 20:27:49.172: Connecting to org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files

… which seem to suggest that Nautilus is installed as flatpak. But after inspection I see that it is just a normal repository install.

Gnome text editor: slow response seems to originate from library issues:

[martina@martina-notebook ~]$ LC_ALL=C gnome-text-editor

Possibly related information:

I’d suggest that the editor would show up immediately without these warnings.

I know that Wayland is not as mature as X11, but I’d not switch back to X11 because only Wayland supports screen scaling in smaller increments (in my case: 1.25, in Settings->screens).

Welcome to the forum!

That’s issue is long fixed and never applied to GNOME.

That’s the Application ID. As you can see, it’s part of localsearch (previously tracker3-miners):

❯ sudo pacman -Fyx org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files
extra/localsearch 3.8.2-1 [installed: 3.8.2-2]
    usr/share/dbus-1/interfaces/org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files.Index.xml
    usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files.Control.service
    usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files.service
    usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files.gschema.xml
    usr/share/localsearch3/miners/org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files.service

Nope. It’s just complaining because you don’t have optional language packages like enchant, aspell, nuspell or libvoikko installed.

Nothing from the terminal output you posted is related. Those are normal info / warning messages.

I can’t reproduce on three machines with both AMD and NVIDIA GPU’s using Wayland.

Please post your system info as outlined here:

Yesterday I did try to install libaspell or libhspell (names as written in the error reports), but that resulted in an error. Therefore I gave up. It’s just your mentioning of these words without the prefixing lib that let me try it again - successfully (enchant was already installed).
I’m not sure whether it’s usual that arch names library packages without lib-prefix (then in contrast to Debian/Ubuntu packages).

The question now is: why are this libs not already part of the default Manjaro installation?

Well, I intended to insert the output of nxi -zv8 into my profile but than it is warned that the 3,000 character count is exceeded. However I can’t imagine that it’s helpful to insert the output in the posting itself. I’ll do it now here (can be removed if it makes sense)

This is indeed helpful. It tells us you have 8G of RAM and no swap; this can lead to issues with memory allocation, especially when using e.g. Firefox.

I’d at least create a swap file, if not a partition.

Because they’re optional dependencies for packages like enchant. They are not required unless one wants spell checking features:

libvoikko: for libvoikko based spell checking support
nuspell: for nuspell based spell checking support

Given the fact that numerous GUI-programs produce output on the shell if started from it, the lack of these libs is harmless. After having installed these, I didn’t see a quicker start.

Hm, upon installation, I didn’t care about defining a swap (partition). Thanks for the hint. At 8 GB that makes sense, especially because the System sees only 6.3 GiB due to shared graphics memory.

Anybody who can say anything about (a bit curious) Nautilus start delay as described? If anything is not clear, please complain
