Slow Kde launch, upower?

Hi

Since some time, boot has become slow.
May be at the time of switching from x11 to wayland.

The boot is fast until it reach the kde screen where it turns for a good 20s before going to the desktop.

Here is what I have.
I’m logging automatically with plasma.
Cant really go back to x11, using 2 displays with different resolution and scalling.

I have seen issues with usb devices. In usb I have plugged in mouse and keyboard and usb A to C adapter.

Tried unpowered and booting without usb in with no change.

What can I do?

Have you tried changing your Session Restore settings?

1. Open System Settings:

2. Go to SessionDesktop SessionSession Restore

3. Change “On login, launch apps that were open” to:

  • Start with an empty session :eyes:

4. Logout (or reboot if you can)

Naturally, if Start with an empty session is already set, this can be safely ignored.

You may also wish to check any other applications that start on login; these can sometimes become a bottleneck.

Power Tip: As you are using BTRFS, please always state that prominently in your Support topic’s first post, and make it clear for those wishing to help.

I have removed the boot tag (booting has finished by the time Plasma begins to launch) and moved your topic to the SupportKDE Plasma category.

Regards.

I was using Session Restore on last logout

but switched to Start with an empty session after switching to wayland because it was flawed. my 2 firefox windows was messed up amond others.

I have another issue, maybe related since wayland it seems. often ( > 75%) waking up from sleep the pc is freezed. keyboard, mouse and display are powered, but no signal on sreen.

From your description, it could be any of several recent issues listed under Known Issues and Solutions.

You might look at some of these headings and their accompanying descriptions in the Update announcements to see if any apply to you:

  • Plasma 6.2 might create a black screen when using X11 and default theme (Note that the workaround for this one is to switch to using Wayland, which it seems you’ve already done).
  • KDE Plasma hangs on Shutdown, Restart and Logout
  • System freeze on suspend

You could also try creating a new User account (for testing) to see if you experience the same; this could help determine whether or not the issue is limited to your current User account.

This is not my area of expertise,

but it could have something to do with the “odd” scaling on Monitor_1

 Monitor-1: DP-1 pos: primary,top-left model: MSI MAG321UX OLED built: 2023
    res: mode: 3840x2160 hz: 240 scale: 130% (1.3)

odd means:

not a simple fraction (1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 5/4, 4/3, 3/2, 2/1) but 13/10 (maybe 125% = 5/4 is faster?)

This is my area of expertise: btrfs

  • the fill level is OK (<85%)
  • please also show the unused memory to assess whether a balance would be helpful (usually it is unnecessary)
    btrfs filesystem usage /
  • recommended mount options for btrfs: “noatime, compress=zstd,
are shown with mount -t btrfs

But any changes on the btrfs-part will only bring small improvements
:footprints:

I seem to recall mentioned in another thread (fairly recently) that setting both monitors to 125% zoom was an effective strategy (this was when using Wayland) and with both at the same refresh rate (whichever is mutually compatible with each monitor).

But this is effectively hearsay, at this point. You could try experimenting a little though.

I have also had the problem with upower since

see my post

no solution

I’ve gone from 5s to be on the desktop to 25s. 5 time slower, very noticeable.

Tested 125%, no improvement

Tested booting to x11, no improvement

Tested Hdr off, no improvement

Tested kernels.

With the 6,12,4-1
boot is slow.
20-22 s for the upower.service

With the 6,11,11-1
boot is slow.
20-22 s for the upower.service

With the 6,6,65-1 lts
boot is fast.
616ms upower.service

Can I pinpoint more precicely the issue, do I need to post it somewhere else?

For my sleep issue, I used this: [SOLVED] System freezes after sleep since update / Newbie Corner / Arch Linux Forums

With kernel 6,6 LTS, no issues, but with the (6,10) 6,12 and 6,11 there is.

Disabling the bluetooth before sleep is working so far.

Do I need to post this somewhere else?

Mod Note: Posts merged to save Forum space.

Since 6.6 is an LTS, why not stick to it?

  • Two reboots would fix this question.
  • Creating another USER and another two reboots would answer this question whilst removing the original USER’s ~/home folder from the equation.

(this would also remove any autostart and session interference).

Since both kernels 6.10 and 6.11 have reached EOL, and if 6.12 also exhibits a similar experience, reverting to kernel 6.6 (LTS) seems the logical resolution; at least for the time being.

Unless there is a significant reason to change to the latest and greatest kernel iteration(s), remaining with 6.1 (LTS) would likely be my choice.

You could try kernel 6.12 or 6.13 every month or two, after a (kernel) update, and see if there’s any change.

Regards.

I am on 6,6 for now yes.

Seems the sleep issue is resolved with newer kernel.

But I didn’t found the why an similar issues for this slow upower.service

I start with an empty Session… I’m using Wayland.

Any Applications I want to open automatically I set them up in System → Autostart.

I have the following applications Autostarting…

Firefox
Mullvad VPN GUI
Kwallet Manager
Dolphin
Konsole

That way Plasma loads before any applications starts loading.

If I expect to return to a previous Session, I use Hibernate, when I shut down at night.

Hope that helps.
