Slow graphics issues after update 2022/06/12. Perhaps NVIDIA driver related

Just wanted to know if anyone is having trouble with graphics since the latest update. I downloaded the whole lot last night before I went to bed, but now my computer is having issues like it’s not using my graphics card when it should be. Yes I am running a NVIDIA graphics card.

Here is my system information:

Might be driver related? Did the drivers get updated with the latest update, can someone help me backdate them?

Thanks very much!

Hi @TWrecks,

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang: Also, if your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

Copy that will do so. Thank you for your time! @Mirdarthos. I’m not sure what else is needed. Is there anything else you would like specifically?

It a the driver is driver is loaded, but I can’t help but get the feeling you’re able to use a newer one. Please provide the output of:

I see for whatever reason you’re using the 470xx drivers. I know there was a problem, not to long ago with version 520xx, but AFAIK that’s been resolved. So let’s uninstall them:

sudo mhwd --remove pci video-nvidia-470xx

Do not restart after this.

Then install the newer one:

sudo mhwd --install pci video-nvidia

Then you can reboot and see if it worked.

Hey was this the intended output from the first command?

Hmmm can I clear this second command safely and try it again? It’s not showing any signs of life. xD

No, let it download.

Copy that

Ok so, I let it download and the installation appears to have worked?

Unfortunately it hasn’t solved the issue. Graphics are still very slow, and another symptom I’ve also noticed is that it’s failing to run proton.

Please provide the output of:

glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"

And this is me, just double-checking, you did reboot after installing the driver, right? Let’s try that anyway.

reboot
    ~  glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"                                              ✔
OpenGL version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 525.60.11

I did, but I’ll do it now anyways. Brb.

No luck after rebooting a second time.

Do you have mesa-demos installed? If not, install is from the extra repository:

pamac install mesa-demos

And then run it with:

glxheads

It might look like nothing’s happening, but it’ll exit when it’s done.

…and provide output here.

Note:

I’m flying blind and only on guesses here, so I might be completely wrong about everything.

It almost looks like it’s using onboard graphics…yet:

… show’s the correct one. What happens when you run steam from the terminal:

steam

Before I get to your commands I just want to say, it really FEELS like it’s using integrated graphics as well. I did a double take a visually checked the HDMI cable was plugged into the graphics card earlier xD

I’ve accidentally run integrated graphics before without meaning to.

    ~  pamac install mesa-demos                                                     ✔

Just need to clarify what you mean to run it with glxheads?
