Sd cards and flash drives not showing in Thunar

So I was wanting to transfer some game files from my computer to an sd card. Just like I successfully did last week. But now my computer suddenly isn’t recognizing the card reader. At least not in a way I can use.
(it’s also not recognizing flash drives)
The card shows up in the terminal with
lsblk
fdisk
lsusb
((sorry if that didn’t type as code… This is my first time on here and i’m trying the 3 ` thing. my phone isn’t letting me highlight for some reason so i can’t try that))
Anyway : I can find the card reader in terminal and it works immediately on my mom’s lubuntu laptop but I can’t get it to show up in Thunar.
It did pop up once after several minutes but wouldn’t mount where I could explore the files… until it decided I could look… after buffering alot. When I tried to transfer files I got an “error splicing” message and it went back to being unable to do anything then vanished.
I tested the card on a miyoo a30 and it does work.
The usb slots on my computer ((a mini pc nucbox gmktec g3 with intel… all I could afford)) also work for everything else (I even transferred different files just today via a usb cord).
…though I do remember having issues with flash drives and sd cards on card readers being stubborn back when I was using windows but it stopped after I switched to Manjaro… until now.
I did have other issues with thunar yesterday and today that went away after I updated. Thunar would open but stop responding immediately after opening or as soon as I tried moving a file around. Don’t know if it’s related.
Also last night it failed at transferring a file over usb cord but it worked fine after updating.
So… that’s basically it… I don’t know what’s going on or how to fix it. The card shows up in terminal but won’t show up in Thunar (minus that one glitchy exception) or mount even though it did last week.
I’ve tried mounting it from the terminal as well though maybe I did it wrong or it just didn’t work.
I don’t know if it’s the drivers, thunar, my mini pc, the card reader, or what…
Any help (with detailed instructions preferably) is appreciated.

Have you checked the ‘settings’? Settings / Removable Drives & Media / Storage
And Settings / Desktop / File Launcher Icons

You haven’t included any system info so I’m guessing, but are you running an rc version of the 7 kernel?

udev-usb-sync and kernel 7.0-rc

If you experience slow transfers to USB attached disks, remove the package udev-usb-sync. It is not known why the 7.0-rc kernel causes this. There may be a regression of some sort. Awaiting the final release of the 7.0 kernel before jumping to conclusions.

See [Unstable Update] April 2026 thread for more info

Just quickly, you have rebooted the computer since upgrading, right?

Please take note of the comment from @bananamangodog:

At this stage Kernel 7 iterations are only release candidates – it is very likely that kernel support for your device is either flaky, or doesn’t exist.

I suggest reverting to kernel 6.18 (LTS) to see if you have better luck. Once kernel 7 is officially released (no longer an “rc”) it may be worth trying it again. Keep in mind that the latest LTS kernel is generally recommended for most cases.

Regards.

[Mini-HowTo] Provide System Information

Basic details provided by *-fetch type apps might give enough information for someone wishing to buy a computer, however, for Support purposes it’s best to ask your system directly.

Output of the inxi command will generate more useful and detailed information for those who may wish to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)

Command output should be presented as pre-formatted text in accordance with forum guidelines. :eyes:

Running inxi within a chroot environment

  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Your privacy is respected

@soundofthunder has missed the fun over the past few days. The version 7 kernels in stable, and testing are not release candidates (rc versions) and so you can ignore that part.

Trying the 6.18 LTS kernel is however a great idea; as is supplying us with the output of inxi -zv8 so we have some idea of what we’re trying to diagnose.

@AstralPhnx28

Mentioned in the Unstable Updates announcement thread:

It might be worthwhile applying the suggested temporary workaround and/or watching that topic (and possibly the Testing announcement thread as well) for any updates on the issue, in case it’s related.

Otherwise, I wonder if you have performed an update recently?

As @bananamangodog mentions, kernel 7.0 is now in all branches – perhaps you only need to apply the latest Stable update, which was made available a few days ago.

Regards.

Regards.

I just come to tell the result of my test. My favourite usb mounts and the speed is OK just as before. Without removing udev-usb.

I don’t know if any of you who responded will see this but I just wanted to say I’m sorry I didn’t respond at all for so long.
I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed a little over a day after making this post and didn’t get to see or respond to the comments until now.
A small update : I got a new card reader which was recognized immediately by pc. I also tested a new flashdrive and it was recognized.
I don’t know why the old ones were revognized on the lubuntu laptop and not my computer but that’s what happened.
I did have a moment where, after formatting the sd card, thunar stopped recognizing it but gparted did recognize it and I created the smallest partition on the card which made it visible to thunar again.
As for system info : I’m not sure exactly how much is needed.
I’m on 6.18.26-1-Manjaro.
I don’t know what other info to give?
Admittedly I’m one of those “switched to linux because windows annoyed me” people who is still learning.

Generally what is advised here:

If in doubt the output of inxi -zv8.

A formatted SD card would have no partitions for thunar to display

xfce:thunar:using-removable-media [Xfce Docs]

Thunar is able to automatically manage removable drives and media if the thunar-volman package is installed on your system*. To enable this feature, open the file manager Preferences, go to the Advanced tab and check the Enable Volume Management box in the Volume Management section. Finally, click on the Configure link right below that. The Removable Drives and Media configuration dialog shown below will be displayed. The tabs in this dialog are organized by device categories to make it easy to locate the options for your specific device.

* thunar-volman is included on Manjaro Xfce ISOs

The following is my system info. Sorry I was slow to getting it on here. Another update is I’ve started having seemingly random moments where an sd card in my card reader will be visible but I can’t copy anything to it despite it having write permissions. I can copy to the same sd card on other devices however.

Hi @AstralPhnx28, please see this quick guide on how to post Terminal output:

[Mini How-To] format code or command output

Select and copy all the text in the Terminal window (minus the prompt, if you are using zsh).
Then paste the output in between two lines containing three backticks
```
or three tildes
~~~

Or:
Copy & paste, then highlight the pasted text and click the </> button at the top of the reply window (easier for smaller outputs).

Cheers!

Did you have the device connected when you ran inxi?

Can you please connect the device(s) and give us the output of lsusb and lsblk?

I’ll have to add multiple terminal outputs because I had a new card reader that seemed to be working but quickly started to have issues with letting me read the sd card.
This first one is with my new card reader which was very slow to read after first few times and even when it did I had trouble trouble transferring files after several times where it worked :

After my most recent response I tried to shutdown my computer because thunar crashed but I got an error (which I didn’t get a chance to screenshot or take a pic of) which said the computer couldn’t shutdown while something else was going on? (sorry… I didn’t catch all the exact words before the screen went to a loading/shutdown screen where it stayed.
I had to hold down the power button to get it to go off.
Not sure if this is important to the situation but thought I’d add it.

Mod edit: Consecutive posts merged. Please edit the last post to add more information.

The inxi output is truncated; it’s always better to provide the full output.

Sorry. I thought it was the full output because it completely stopped. I tested after reading your response and this time it actually completed. Here’s the completed version. (sorry again)

(oh btw sorry I did 2 separate posts that you had to merge. I was using my phone and it wouldn’t let me edit the first one for some reason…)

No worries. I’m unfortunately needing to do that when I’m out and about, so I know exactly what you’re saying. Post edits on that thing are a nightmare!

Actually, are you using the Web version of the site? I think some controls may be inaccessible using the Mobile version.

Also, I’ve known inxi to “hang up” for a brief period whilst certain parameters were being fetched. Maybe it was just down to that.

I’m trying to use the web version when I can. The edit from earlier was due to my computer hanging when I tried to reboot because Thunar crashed so I only had my phone.
