hmm, my power management no longer works … everything should run continuously but my screen now switches off after 5 minutes

it is not switching off, just uses the screensaver. See here: Disable screen blanking - #6 by AnotherStateOfMatter
Call xfce4-screensaver-preferences and disable the screensaver.
