Programs only open with Krunner, desktop icons missing after 2-12-2023 Update

After today’s update I can login as normal but there are no desktop icons, and no programs will run. I can’t even open Konsole.

Unfortunately I did not run Timeshift before updating this time.

Please give me something to try since this is my daily driver.

Hi @jcorporon,

You could always boot with a live ISO, enter a chroot environment and update the system to sync it again.

How to chroot

  1. Ensure you’ve got a relatively new ISO or at least one with a still supported LTS kernel.

  2. Write/copy/dd the ISO to a USB thumb drive.

  3. When done, boot with the above mentioned USB thumb drive into the live environment.

  4. Once booted, open a terminal and enter the following command to enter the chroot encironment:

manjaro-chroot -a
  1. If you have more than one Linux installation, select the correct one to use from the list provided.

When done, you should now be in the chroot environment.

But, be careful, as you’re now in an actual root environment on your computer, so any changes you make will persist after a restart.

Then, from within the chroot environment, run the update to synchronize the system again:

Full update:

sudo pacman-mirrors -f 5 && pamac upgrade

This will update your mirror-list and ONLY if that was successful update your system.

I recommend pamac instead of pacman, especially for newcomers, as pamac was developed by Manajaro (developers) for Manjaro and just takes care of more thing than pacman.

If successful, reboot and see if it worked. If not, re-enter the chroot environment, and from there execute:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

…and provide it here, please.

I might not, probably won’t, be here for longer than 5 more minutes, seeing as my day is ending this side of the world. But if necessary someone else should be able to pick up and continue.

Hope you manage!

I already tried updating mirrors and there was nothing to do. I’ll go back to chroot and try again, plus run inxi.

Thanks.

Here’s the output from inxi directly from the affected desktop:

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem

Hopefully someone knows what’s going on. I don’t know how to proceed.

Me too, I am a beginner and it is not me who would find the solution…

I just discovered I can run programs when I launch them from KRunner. But normal clicking on icons doesn’t work.

you’re right !

Changed the title of the post to better identify the problem.

Cleaning the KDE cache has been suggested in the past as something to try.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE#Clean_cache_to_resolve_upgrade_problems

@Takakage thanks for the tip - I thought that was going to work, but unfortunately it didn’t change anything.

Here are all 3 symptoms I’ve discovered:

  1. Desktop items not showing
  2. Can’t start programs by clicking icons (only can start with Krunner)
  3. When attempting to switch wallpapers they only show as black.

I’ve tried removing .cache (twice) and reinstalling anything to do with Plasma in Pamac, to no avail.

I sure hope someone can assist because I don’t want to reinstall unless I have no other choice.

Next time I will absolutely use Timeshift in advance.

Hi,
I just started Music and I get an error message that says “Gnome Music can’t connect to Tracker. Your music can’t be indexed if Tracker is not working”. So the problem seems to be tracker related but I don’t know what else to infer from this…

I’m having this same issue.

Here’s my inxi output:

This happened with the latest update. Something to note, I had to re-install my NVIDIA drivers from this update. As with OP, Krunner opens/runs things fine. Also something to note, once a program has been opened from Krunner, it can be clicked on / interacted with with no further issues from the task bar.

Running an application from the start menu causes the icon to briefly show in the taskbar before disappearing. Nothing I’ve tried to open from the start menu has worked; all the same programs I can open without issue from console after opening console through krunner.

[EDIT: I can open everything through krunner directly rather than going through console. Everything works fine through there.]

[EDIT, Part Deux] I also tried the full update. Nothing was set to update and everything seems to have installed fine the first time.

[EDIT 33 1/3] Clearing the cache and running ‘kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental’ did not resolve the issue.

Same problem here but i discovered that it occurs only on user account from which update was made. When i log on other user account everything is working properly.

Just to give a bit more insight, I ran the upgrade in two of my computers, but only one got affected by this.

My laptop that got affected:

create a new test user in system settings, reboot and log in with the test user …
if it has no issues its something messed up in your main user, so in that case, in your main user in your home directory rename the following folders:
.cache to .cache.bak
.config to .config.bak
and delete or rename the kscreen folder in /home/.local/share/kscreen
reboot

I got the same problem.
I have renamed the kscreen folder ( /home/.local/share/kscreen ) and restarted my computer :arrow_right: nothing happen…

if you have no issues with the test user, it is something in your main user causing it…
rename also the cache and config folders, as instructed above and reboot
