Anybody else having trouble launching Steam like . . . at all? This problem started late last night, and I have tried rebooting, updating, rebooting again ever since, and still I’m not able to get Steam to launch. System Monitor only briefly shows a few processes running when I try, before they all terminate. What’s going on, and what can I do about it?
Please provide system information - at least an inxi -zv8
By any chance using kernel older than 6.18 or modulejail?
Well, you asked for it:

In short, I believe the answer to your question would be “no”.
How about
lsmod |grep ntsync
By the way code is inserted between two rows of 3 ticks ``` on new lines. Fixed it for you the first time.
Thank you.
❯ lsmod |grep ntsync
ntsync 20480 0
OK than it’s not what i thought. Out of ideas for now. Does starting stream from the command line says something?

Only noticeable difference was before rebooting it took 5 seconds, but on a fresh boot it took 63.
I’m sure this is why your Steam doesn’t boot. You are on a older model, but still on 580, so that shouldn’t be the problem.
It was literally working yesterday. What can I do to get it working again?

Trying dedicated steam commands doesn’t seem to work, either.
Well, im certainly not an expert with this kinda stuff, but i can give a try.
If it always worked and suddenly it doesn’t, i would assume a package update could be the culprit. If you keep backups of your system, rollback to a point in time where everything should be working fine. If Steam starts working again, i think it’s safe at this point that it was a package update.
Another thing you could do is provide a bit more information. This can be done with the following command.
journalctl -b | grep 'nvidia'
This will provide a system log of your system since your last boot (the -b part) where only lines containing ‘nvidia’ will be shown (the grep part).
It is difficult to guess - this looks pretty severe - a red flag
When the driver fails to load, looks strange… especially if it is out of the blue… perhaps the next red flag has something to do with it?
Have you considered a general inventory checkup - looks like your disk is pretty filled?

Thanks for the heads up about my computer memory. Of course something like this would be it. I’ll be keeping an eye out for files I can clean out moving forward. Maybe work on my Screenshots folder finally, maybe seeing what else on Steam I could have uninstalled once I get that running again . . .

3.2 gigs certainly isn’t anything to sneeze at; I’ll try again when I boot after I wake up, and keep you posted on whether it worked.
Nothing crazy there.
I admit I have very little Nvidia knowledge.
So my attempts of helping is of general troubleshooting character.
I am assuming your system is otherwise working - in a graphical sense - Gnome desktop is otherwise working? Is that correct?
I am not able to deduce whether it is one or the other so here is some generic information.
The Nvidia GPU driver comes in two flavors
- The Nvidia open driver
- The Nvidia proprietary driver
And it is available as a prebuild package named after the kernel - since you are using Linux 7.1
linux71-nvidia-580xxlinux71-nvidia-580xx-open
Or it can be dynamically build using DKMS (which requires the matching kernel headers to be synced)
nvidia-580xx-dkmsnvidia-580xx-dkms-open
It may be worth checking which driver is currently synced to your system
pamac search nvidia-580xx | grep -e 'Installed'
Then try replacing with the opposite open or closed depending on the currently active driver.
Have you checked if there are some .pacnew or .pacsave files that might need attention?
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/howto-handle-some-pacnew-files-best/181141
Correct, my desktop is not at present borked graphically. It was at one point some months ago, at which point I did have to mess around with my graphics drivers, which makes me hesitant to do so again. For your consideration:
❯ pamac search nvidia-580xx | grep -e 'Installed'

I have not as yet checked on my .pacnew or .pacsave files. I’ll look into that.
ADD: to clarify, Steam again failed to launch today. Which is why I’m going to look into the aforementioned files.
ADD2: to the best of my ability, I have been following the instructions in the thread Erim linked to, but I am not sure what action(s) I want to take at this particular juncture. What should I do?
So you already did the Distro update from 4 days?
And when your client was working after that Release Update, i then assume it is related to Steam Background Client Updates, they are stored somewhere here:
~/.local/share/Steam
My guess is, that you open steam after it was working for you and closed it to quick again after the invisible and hidden Steam Client Update was downloading in background and maybe the download got corrupted while you closed the application. This automatic client updates will be executed on the next Client Start up and this is broken now.
I recommend to backup your Steam folder just in case and execute this Script which Philm posted there to reset your Steam Client:
Goodluck!
@Taz_pika you probably shouldn’t touch any of those pacnews. Read the tutorial and if unclear post another topic since this is another problem.
