Power management problems - Keeps Suspending

First a bit of background: I’m currently trying to breathe some new life into a 10-year-old Acer Aspire 5551 as a web-and-word machine. It’s been given more RAM, a bigger hard disk (SSD is coming soon) and a fully updated BIOS. All it needed was an OS suited for the use and age of the machine that was still supplied with security updates. I previously posted on Reddit in r/linuxquestions for help in that search (the resulting discussion also pointing me here) and I’ve settled mostly on Manjaro Xfce using a 4.9 kernel, mainly due to compatibility with my non-KMS graphics chip. It’s worth noting that I’m mainly a Windows user, and while I have used Linux sometimes, my experience with it is limited, and this is the first time I’m actively using something non-Debian based.

The last hurdle is a problem that seemingly stems from power management, and I can’t work out what exactly is causing it (or them as I’m not sure if this is two issues or one).

When the laptop boots, it hits grub and starts loading Manjaro. Shortly before it hits the login screen it’ll suspend, and I’ll have to press something to kick it into life to finish loading. Then as of this point, I have approximately 20 seconds in between it waking up and when it’ll suspend again, repeatedly regardless of input, until I manage to log in and it finishes loading my desktop. Once it has loaded, it’s fine and seems to be solid, until shutdown, where it’ll suspend once more just before the system halts and it sends the shutdown signal to actually power off.

The other issue is I can’t access the Xfce power management settings. From the Settings Manager, if I press “Power Manager” it’ll simply sit there spinning the busy cursor. I have tried reinstalling xfce4-power-manager and fully removing it and upower and installing afresh. While remove-and-install will sometimes inconsistently let me access it, it’ll be back to broken next boot, and when I can access it I can’t see any options to differentiate between AC and battery power.

If I remove xfce4-power-manager and then reboot the 20-second suspend windows become constant, which makes fixing it very frustrating, but also indicating that xfce4-power-manager was what was stopping them after hitting the desktop. I have seen there’s a similar package called xfce4-power-manager-gtk3 but I’m not sure what this does differently from the one that came with manjaro without the -gtk3, and installing it seems to only install it and not upower as a dependency, which leads me to believe it’s not a drop-in replacement.

What is going on? and what can I do to track down the culprit?
(I’m cross-posting this on StackExchange Unix and Linux, and Reddit r/linuxquestions to cast my net wider for someone who may have an idea about what the problem but can’t link to them to allow cross-pollination of answers due to what I assume is my newness to this forum)

That kernel is EOL. Please upgrade to 5.10 LTS (Long Time support) or 5.4 LTS as your machine seems to be quite old.

Please read this:

Please tell us if this aberrant behaviour is present in both 5.4 and 5.10… :innocent:

How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

:+1:

That post for windows users is a bit patronising in places. I may be mainly a Windows user, but I’m not a total noob to Linux, I have used Debian-based distros before on occasion. I’d never daily drive Linux, as it doesn’t do what I want for regular use as the programs and games I use are not available for Linux; but I am by no means a supremacist of any OS and understand horses for courses. That’s why I’m in this situation; I needed something lightweight, free, secure, and compatible with modern rich internet browsing for my laptop. I also run Ubuntu Server on my home multipurpose server.

However, I will admit some tidbits like the use of inxi and the log commands have eluded me until now, so that last link was super helpful to learn them and may have given me a few points towards the culprit - am I right to assume those are available on other non-Arch distros in the same way? They probably passed me by as I’d not needed those kinds of things as I’ve not had hardware-based issues before and have had success in googling a solution to any mind software-based issues I’ve hit, and I’ve comprehended what the fix is. But in this case, I can’t comprehend the problem.

inxi, grub and log outputs at end.

This is my first foray outside of Debian and android, but it’s not especially by choice. Installing using the Manjaro Architect command line and using the lowest kernel possible (4.4) got me further on this laptop than any other distro I tried, and I tried a lot form different families and sometimes different versions of the same.

That kernel is EOL. Please upgrade to 5.10 LTS (Long Time Support) or 5.4 LTS as your machine seems to be quite old.

4.9 isn’t EOL according to what I’ve read. It should be supported until 2023 as it’s an LTS itself. Or is that different per distro?

When I was trying other distros before I settled on Manjaro, I was installing with default kernels with their default kernels and the most success I had was an even older version of Ubuntu Studio as it simply installed and ran, but the version was definitely EOL, and it ran like molasses as it was too demanding.

Any live CD using a modern kernel REALLY didn’t like my graphics chip that doesn’t support KMS and seemed to give me even more issues even installing the OS - this included the straight Manjaro Xfce live CD which wouldn’t even boot to desktop. But now I’m not sure if it was the graphics thing or something else that was causing the issues.

I have tried 4.14 since posting and it seems to give more success with the xfce3-power-manager gui, but still seems to go to sleep before login and just before power off. but there are some times it gets stuck with a black screen after logon

I just installed 5.4 and 5.10 and while neither decided to sleep on boot and didn’t give me the expected graphics chip issues, they still did it just before power off and I had no network access as both my LAN and wifi seemed to be disabled and I couldn’t get them to re-enable. I’ve also had the occasional black screen after logon with 5.10

I’ve was doing some digging of my own and my current theory was that the repeated suspending is stopped by upower starting and taking over power management. As checking systemctl status upower and last has upower starting 30-60 secs after my logon. And now I know how to pull the boot log, it seemed to confirm this with systemd[1]: Failed to start Daemon for power management. and variations, and this is not present in 5.10. Doesn’t help me find out what’s causing the suspend every 20 seconds if upower isn’t present, which is likely why it suspends before power off because upower has been stopped.

I can’t see anything in the 5.10 log that points to why the network is screwed on that kernel.

Neither 4.9 or 5.10 had anything regarding the graphics problems that plagued the live CDs, which was a relief.

:man_facepalming:

Urgh! i misread that as 5.9! (too many people on EOL kernel)

So when you shut down the machine it goes to sleep???

try TLP instead of upower: tlp is in constant development. (but take a System Backup first before trying that!

Upowrr wasn’t installed manually by me, it’s a dependency of xfce3-power-managment which was a default package in the xfce desktop setup in the architect installer.

If Upower isn’t running, the laptop suspends every 20 seconds. When it originally fails to start when using a 4.x kernel, this 20 second suspend cycle happens before i log on and upower manages to start successfully.

On all kernels I’ve observed the behaviour that when i tell it to shut down it’ll go most of the way, suspend, then when i wake it up it’ll finish off and power off. My suspicion is that this happens when upower is stopped.

TLP is apparently installed by default too. And I tried editing the config file at one point, assuming it was the reason, but either i changed the wrong bits or TLP is not the problem. Thinking about it i need to check if it’s running and what it’s doing.

I do lament potentially losing GUI access to these settings, but then power management is generally a set-once-and-forget thing so it’s not that bad.

In that case, remove TLP because 2 power managers is a recipe for weird problems like this…

So they’re both independent things? I wasn’t sure if upower enabled controlling TLP or some other power management in a friendly way.

But if that’s the case it’s very odd that both would be installed by default in a new installation.

removed TLP, it’s still doing the same weird stuff with suspending. so while upower seems to stop the oddness when that service is started, there’s still something happening to trigger a suspend on shutdown, (and still occasionally before logon, this is apparently intermittent)

What logs can i check for events like this?

I would do a:

journalctl --system --priority=4 | grep power

Anything interesting there?

I tried a few different greps (“sleep” “power” “S3” “suspend”) as well as restricting the time as well as i didn’t realise that kept logs so far back.

so “power” got me the following logs from the last two and previous boots. This is so inconsistent. 2 boots ago boot i got a ton of upower.service errors of varying kinds but on previous boot i didn’t get any of those and got a few Could not acquire inhibitor lock: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.login1.OperationInProgress: The operation inhibition has been requested for is already running instead. This boot, nada. All the logs were stating success or status in some form, yet the sodding thing went to sleep three times before i logged on.

grepping “sleep”, “suspend” and “S3” gave nothing useful except “i’m going to sleep” and “I’m waking up” but not what’s causing it

So i’m seeing nothing super usful as to the reason due to the inconsistency and especially this boot showing nothing wrong but it still suspending. but i am seeing some bits that make me go “why isn’t upower starting?”

I’m sorry: I’m at a loss too. Last ditch effort: can you disable the laptop power buttons as it seems to be intermittent, so maybe it’s one of the buttons.

fab-root@fab-manjaro:~
$ grep --ignore-case lid /etc/systemd/logind.conf
#HandleLidSwitch=suspend
#HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend
#HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore
#LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=yes
fab-root@fab-manjaro:~
$ grep --ignore-case power /etc/systemd/logind.conf
#HandlePowerKey=poweroff
#HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend
#PowerKeyIgnoreInhibited=no

Set both IgnoreInhibited to no and set all the others to ignore

:crossed_fingers:

Warning! This, obviously means you can only shut down your system using the menu system or terminal!

So I’ve not done your suggestion yet, mainly as i believe theres more underlying issues.

Starting it a few times today, I’ve had some times it suspended, sometimes it didn’t. Not once did i have network when i hit the desktop. And on some occasions it actually froze just after the logon prompt.

I’m starting to think this is actually a bad hard disk due to age and these are manifestations of bad reads. So I’m going to buy a replacement SSD (which was on the cards anyway) and see if a re-install will do the trick.

New SSD arrived today. Nice and cheap, this only needed a 120GB disk, could’ve likely gotten away with less.

Installed Manjaro using the architect ISO like last tike, and initially only installed the known-good 4.4 kernel.

Installed and booted nice and quickly. And with no issues.

So i installed kernel 5.4, updated grub so i could swap, and booted to that.

And it all seems to ‘just work’ not hit anything yet, but we’ll see if that lasts.

If it does, it was a Hard Disk issue.
