I have read similar posts on here that talk about their backlight key not working. My situation seems different. When I first boot into Manjaro it works fine. My backlight key has 3 levels. Bright, dim and off. Everytime I press the key it cycles through these steps.
With the testing I have done so far it seems that after the computer goes to sleep and wakes up the key changes its function to when I hit the key it goes to sleep. I hit the key again and the laptop wakes up. Very weird. Also during this time the light no longer functions.
I have a feeling it is a kernel issue but not sure how to go about troubleshooting to be sure.
I was thinking about downgrading the kernel as a try but didn’t know how far back to go.
I will include my inxi results below.
I don’t know exactly when this started. I have done several kernel upgrades and don’t always use the backlight on the keyboard.

no idea re your issue - my backlight can’t be switched on/off - it’s dependent on ambient brightness and automatic
No mine don’t work off of ambient brightness. When I start to type it lights up.
same for mine - what I meant is:
it won’t turn on when the ambient brightness is high enough for all the keys to be clearly visible
there is no switch or key to turn the feature on/off
if it’s dark outside - it will turn on as soon as a key is touched - and will turn off again a few seconds later
(I responded too quickly - you where still writing, it seems - and now my post doesn’t make sense …) 
Never tested that but there is a key. It is the f5 function key on my laptop.
New info I use xscreensaver. When the screensaver kicked in and I clicked my mouse to activate the screen the function key for the keyboard light changed to putting the computer to sleep and no longer lights up the keyboard when I hit it or start typing,
I tried the things in the arch wiki on keyboard brightness but none of that worked for me.
I couldn’t get the service to start. It said it couldn’t find the service and the python script gave me errors.
I also noticed that when the keyboard doesn’t light up while typing that if I press the Caps lock button it doesn’t stay light . It just flashes the light on and off but it is in Caps lock mode.
It might be early but it looks like this kernel update fixed my issue.

I was wrong I still have the problem.
I know I’m not supposed to create a new reply but nobody has suggested anything for me.
I am at a loss for what to do here. I have been through several kernel updates and none of them are making a difference.
I’m not sure what to try to figure this out.
I Have decided to try some different kernels to see if that is the issue.
Right now I installed:

Well I was hoping somebody would respond with something that could make me sure I was on the right path for this issue.
Since it is working with kernel 6.6.47-1-MANJARO I will conclude that something in the newer kernels has broken my backlight keyboard light.
Maybe there is a bug report out there but I don’t know where to look for that.
I will mark this solved once again.
