Backlight key for keyboard not working again

This issue is back again on kernel 6.11
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/on-my-hp-spectre-x360-my-keyboard-backlight-key-quits-working/167163

Just updated to the 6.12 non rc kernel and it seems to be working as expected.

I was wrong . Not working after laptop went to sleep.

Am I the only one with this issue?

Also one more thing to add to this if I didn’t mention it before.
I also have a pure Arch system that doesn’t show this issue.

Just wanted to make sure this issue is reported. Thanks

Still not working with :
[demo@Manjaro ~]$ uname -a Linux Manjaro 6.12.0-2-MANJARO #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue, 19 Nov 2024 22:37:22 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Whatever kernel it was working with; presuming it was working at some point; switch back to that kernel until more information is known.

Good luck.

Yeah it is working fine with.
6.10.14-1-MANJARO

As that kernel has reached EOL perhaps kernels 6.1 (LTS) or 6.6 (LTS) might be the best workaround in the meantime (assuming it works).

Well Linux-meta just hit my laptop and removed the 6.10 kernel for me.
Since 6.11 and 6.12 are giving me issue with keyboard backlight I installed 6.6 as you suggested.

The presumption is that the backlight is now working as expected with kernel 6.6 (LTS); but, you haven’t (yet) confirmed this either way.

This thread can be closed after you confirm it or mark a solution.

Cheers.

Yes it works with 6.6.
But is there a way to find out if the people who work on 6.11 and 6.12 either know that there is a problem with backlight key not working right or are working on a solution?
Thanks

Difficult to say. It may be that its only an issue on a small range of hardware. If it were a more widespread issue it might have already been addressed, but I’ve seen nothing specific.

Remember though, it’s still early days with 6.12 despite it being newly released. Try it again now and then as its progressively updated; you might find it suddenly just works.

Cheers.

Yeah I know it will eventually be fixed. Weird it worked with 6.10.
I don’t know how they upgrade kernels but it seems weird to me that a feature would break from kernel to kernel.
I don’t know who checks these things.
I thought that new kernels just added support for new hardware.

AFAIK, Manjaro kernels are not built the same way as Arch kernels - different patches, for example.
That might introduce the difference between it working in Arch and not working in Manjaro.

I have a pure Arch also and it is working fine there also.
Do you see the same problem I have in Manjaro?

I know. You told us.
What I wanted to suggest is:
compare how the working Arch kernel is built with how the non-working Manjaro kernel is built.
… compare the PKGBUILD’s - perhaps you’ll find a clue there :man_shrugging:
