No sound - Maybe update? Installed new soundcard, still don't work

Dear all,

I do have an odyssey about my sound. Somewhen last three weeks after having an update, my sound did not work at all.

First, I had a soundblaster Z installed. Great sound with headphones. But suddently, I call it like that, it did not work at all. I checked this forum for some support:

I thought that my soundcard got broken, because sound worked with onboard chip and external USB headset.

I bought a brandnew soundblaster AE 7. Installed it, faced the same problem as with the soundblaster Z.

Now, I am curious that something with Pulse audio may not work.

ALSA seems to work fine. Started with kernel 5.13, did not work. Migrated down to 5.10, did not work. Pavu only gives me the possibility to use digital port, but not analog one. I checked all options in alsamixer, nothing worked. I am absolutely down and do not know what the problem is.

Pipewire cannot support audio unless PulseAudio is removed and replaced, but it might impede PulseAudio functions

Hi,

disabling pipewire was somehow the key. Now, sound is working and it is such a pleasure using this soundcard!

But it still had some issue to get it really working. I had to switch on off the use of different channels in the audio settings of Gnome and pavucontrol. And it inferred with alsamixer.

In alsamixer I had to turn on all surround sound outputs. Only with this combination it do work. Strange, but hey, it works.

It is contnuing that I do have problems with my sound.

I can get it working, if I switch on all sorround channels in alsamixer. Then I need to toggle back and forth the playback channel for my Nvidia HDMI. Then I switch back to the soundcard, only then it works for a while. Until the playing audio stream is interupted, then it stops working and I need to do the whole excercise again.

I am frustrated!

Error message advises cookie file was not found, but no error finding .tdb files

If you check the systemd service and socket are functioning correctly

systemctl --user status pulseaudio*

and the service is active (running) with no error messages, new cookie and database files would have been created when PulseAudio restarted

I had some excursion to Ubuntu and back. On Ubuntu 21.04 sound worked and with the update to 21.10 it has the same problem as Manjaro had it.

I changed my system back to Manjaro and still have no sound.

I have a Creative AE-5 (non-Plus) there is no sound issues besides, that my centerspeaker from my 5.1 system won’t work sometimes (but reactivated when i boot into windows and reboot in Manjaro).

Headphones always working, no matter which Linux Kernel i use.

My information about AE-7 are not up to date, but befor i bought my AE-5 Soundcard 1 year ago, i read alot bad stuff that the AE-7 is not really supported. Because this model is to rare and expensive and far away from mainstream.

Since you got problems with even your Soundblaster Z maybe there is another issue going on in your system, maybe try to deactivate Onboard Sound (if you had this enabled) in your Bios, you could also try to deactivate the nvidia Sound. Maybe there is other Sound devices (like a VR HMD or USB Headphones) on your PC connected that interference with your Soundcard.

Yeah, kind of an issue with the AE-7. Looks stunning, would be a good device but too rare.

I already deactivated the on board sound. I would like to give he deactivation of the NV sound a go. Do you know how to deactivate it?

I can’t tell how that works in gnome but in KDE you can deactivate under System Settings>Audio>Configure>Tue102 HD Audio Controller>Profile: OFF.
