Need to reboot after start

Hi, few weeks ago my PC freezed while booting. I hardly reset it with button and on the second boot everything worked fine. From then everytime I start PC I need to boot twice to have it working

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.11
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.115.0
Qt Version: 5.15.12
Kernel Version: 6.6.26-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 8 × AMD Ryzen 7 4700U with Radeon Graphics
Memory: 15,0 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon Graphics
Manufacturer: LENOVO
System Version: IdeaPad 5 15ARE05

You have broken something by performing a hard reset. Without providing more information, it’s likely nobody here can help you.

Please provide outputs of the following commands for

1. System information

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

2. Recent logs

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 --catalog --no-pager

…and someone might be able to help further.

In the meantime, you might benefit from a little housekeeping…

Please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit. To that end, some or all these links will be invaluable:

And last, but not least, the Stable Update Announcements, which you should check frequently for important update related information. Occasionally an issue might be directly related to a particular update; it’s always best to check those announcements.

Cheers.

Aside:- Please see the following link for an alternative to a hard reset; and shutting down more safely (some value-added goodness):

is your system up to date?
enable early loading and see if it helps:
kate /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
and edit the modules section to look like this:

MODULES=(amdgpu)

save it and update it:
sudo mkinitcpio -P
reboot and test

Did not help, It still freezes and runs after turning off and again starting

That error message seems odd. A bit of Googling suggests it may be caused by a corrupt file or failing disk drive. In particular, a failing drive might explain why there’s lots of weirdness going on in that log.

A quick way of testing would be to try booting from a USB boot disk - not necessarily installing. If you can boot off the boot disk, then that points strongly to some form of corruption on the drive. From there, I’d recommend checking the drive health. If it’s failing, replace the drive. Otherwise, either try to figure out what’s corrupted or reinstall the OS.

Both RAM and SSD seems fine after check. Also if I reboot or turnoff PC with the REISUB/O then the PC wont boot, It boots only right after the hard reset with the button.

If you continue to perform a hard reset there is a chance of damage.

Instead, you could use REISUB/O, as you have already tried.

Once it has shut down properly, disconnect the power cable for one (1) minute, and then reconnect the power. The machine should then start as expected, as long as no damage or other factors prevent it.

Disconnecting power in this way can sometimes help. It won’t solve the issue, but it will prevent any possible compounding of the problem.

It might also be useful to have a bootable grub instance available on CD or USB Super Grub 2 Disk, or better yet, download the ISO and copy it to a Ventoy USB. This could be invaluable to boot your system when the main bootloader fails, for whatever reason.

Cheers.

Thank you for valuable advices for the future.
I already fixed the problem.

Problem as it seems was that plymouth local was newer than extra and after downgrading it works.

Please check if the problem persists with a USB boot disk. It’s a simple way to determine if there is a problem with your current install, or if it’s something to do with either Manjaro not configuring something correctly or bad hardware.

@soundofthunder As this user has an SSD, and is powering off during boot (i.e. likely before any filesystem is mounted as read/write) actual damage from a hard power off is very unlikely. Even if it gets mounted as read/write, a worst case is file system corruption, although this is really unlikely with journaling file systems like ext4. REISUB/O is good practice, especially when dealing with hard drives or non-journaled file systems, but there’s no reason to exaggerate the risks.

If there is actual damage to the system, then physical damage (i.e. if the laptop was dropped or hit during transport, or not correctly reassembled or similar) is by far the most likely culprit. However, I think a best guess at the moment is there is something in @toki_cz install that is wrong for some reason, hence why testing with a live USB stick is a pretty good idea.

@dgdg - It rarely hurts to err on the side of caution as risks exist, irrespective of the likelihood. If *“there’s no reason to exaggerate the risks” was targetting my use of bolded text, that was only an attempt to offset my suggestion that the “machine should then start as expected” after brief disconnection from power, which clearly cannot be guaranteed.

As it turns out, Plymouth was apparently the culprit; something I (and others) might normally have recognised or anticipated from the onset; however, not so, in this instance. :man_shrugging:

Cheers.

Ah, a cross posted solution. All good then.

@soundofthunder The point I was making was that you were repeatedly insisting that there was a risk of damage, that something had been broken by the hard reset, and that damage from a hard reset was inevitable and cumulative (" If you continue to perform a hard reset you will cause additional damage - it’s only a question of how soon and how much"). This is needlessly alarmist and frankly, incorrect. As I pointed out, this is very unlikely given the configuration, and as it turns out, the hard resets did no damage to the system.

I should also point out that I would also apply the same caution to the HowTo article you linked. It needlessly exaggerates the risks of what happens on a hard power off. I’d agree that most of the time REISUB/O is good practice, but it’s also true that with modern systems that don’t use hard drives, the risk of a hard power off causing a problem is vanishingly small. Indeed, depending on the nature of the failure, a hard power off may incur less risk (for example, if a process is wiping your disk, a hard power off is less risky as REISUB/O takes more time).

I can see how you might focus on that; edited to appear less alarmist.

The wording of the linked article, however, which you also criticised is beyond my control; save rewriting it. Perhaps, as you feel so strongly about it, there’s a task for you, if time and opportunity allows, naturally.

Cheers.
