Manjaro started hard crashing frequently today

For some reason, Manjaro started crashing very frequently today (anywhere between 5-20 minutes after booting, at random. In crashing, I mean the display going blank and a few seconds after the GRUB screen appearing. This is definitely not a graceful shutdown or some userland applications crashing. Even pending file operations are stopped halfway.

Here’s the partial output of inxi -zv8

Here’s things some things I noticed/tried:

  • It happens more frequently when doing file operations, often even completing them only halfway leading to corrupted files (I am not sure if this is actually the case, it might just because I moved a lot of files today)
  • I installed a new ram stick recently. I thought this might be the issue, but my dual-boot windows is working fine and a quick Memtest didn’t reveal anything being off.
  • I installed a new kernel today (6.12.4-1, before I was on 6.11.11-1). Even after switching back to the original kernel, the crashes are still occuring.
  • After the crashes I updated my BIOS, but this did not fix things.
  • I ran some tests using stress, but this didn’t reveal anything either. It’s not OOM or some sort of CPU overload or overheating. I also have a swap partition that is seemingly used correctly.
  • I checked the logs using journalctl -b -1 but this didn’t reveal anything out of the ordinary

I’m honestly at a loss here on how to proceed, if anyone has any insight I’d be very grateful.

When was the last time you updated the system.

Hi @Pflyg, and welcome!

Better would be:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

…and please don’t make it partial.

Please also note and heed:

Hope you manage!

Please also provide the output of the following:

journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1

Where:

  • The --priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;
  • the --no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum; and
  • the --boot=-1 argument limits the output to log messages from the previous boot. This can be adjusted to -2 for the boot before that, -3 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth.

More:

Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as a general introduction for new forum users. Please take the time to follow links given and learn how to create effective Support requests and encourage quality responses.

Full inxi output is usually preferred.

The following command provides more information that might potentially be useful for those wishing to help. In this case, any personally identifiable information is filtered from the output.

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Regards.

AMD based systems can be quite picky when it comes to RAM so your ram upgrade is the likely cause.

Good call, add to the list

pacdiff -o

Sounds very hardware related to me. You can also see the journal from last boot after reboot - at the very end, ist there a serious io or kernel error?

journalctl -b -1 -r

A normal shutdown will end like this for example:

Here’s the output of pacdiff -o. I also recently updated the system (I think the day before this started happening), so that is also a possible culprit.

/etc/profile.pacnew
/etc/pacman.conf.pacnew
/etc/makepkg.conf.d/rust.conf.pacnew

Have you switched off Fast startup in Windoze?

How have you mounted /dev/nvme1n1p3? If via /etc/fstab, please show this file.

Is it possible to temporary remove the newly installed RAM modules to verify if this might interfere with your issue?
