Manjaro doesn’t boot/blackscreens

I am not quite sure if this belongs into this category, but it seems the most probable to me.

The issue is rather simple:
When booting into my Manjaro (from GRUB or BIOS, doesn’t matter as far as I know) it doesn’t boot/ doesn’t send any visual data to my monitors.

I have tried:

  • booting the default kernel, the fallback kernel and a snapshot from a few days ago from GRUB
  • booting the default kernel from BIOS
  • complete repair from the recovery tool on a boot stick.

Things that might be related:

  • I reinstalled my Manjaro about a week ago, and copied my old home into the new one (although that shouldn’t impact the boot process afaik)
  • after the reinstall I had to manually set $root and $prefix multiple times in grub rescue (it reset after rebooting) but it seems to be in order now
  • checking $prefix delivers prefix to be ´(hd3,gpt2)/@/boot/gr´, u and b seem to be missing, but maybe this is just a format anomaly when printing, nothing internal

If there is need for further data, please tell,.

Welcome to the Manjaro Community!

A bit more info may be helpful, e.g. inxi -zv8. This will tell us more about your system e.g. if you have nvidia graphics, etc…

Are you able to get into a TTY? CTRL + ALT + F3?

I am not able to get into a terminal, my system simply does not send any graphics information to either of my two monitors, As for your extensive system info inquiry, note that this is from a boot stick, so some data may slightly diverge from my usual setup and i put a sudo in front:

Cheers; if you are able to chroot into your system manjaro-chroot -a, maybe try removing quiet and splash from the parameters, via e.g. nano /etc/default/grub?

sadly i am not able to manjaro-chroot, i have tried that with a friend already:

manjaro-chroot -a
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdc1. Check your device.map.
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdc1. Check your device.map.
==> ERROR: No Linux partitions detected!

Note: when choosing my mounting point manually, the error looks like this:

    ~  manjaro-chroot /run/media/manjaro/8b8ca515-8b79-42b4-bac3-251d6304ee22
mount: /run/media/manjaro/8b8ca515-8b79-42b4-bac3-251d6304ee22/proc: mount point does not exist.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
==> ERROR: failed to setup API filesystems in chroot /run/media/manjaro/8b8ca515-8b79-42b4-bac3-251d6304ee22
umount: bad usage
Try 'umount --help' for more information.

I can however access the file via the drives mount in /run/media/manjaro

I suspect this may be at least part of the issue.

The times i have done this previously, it was not truncated like this, Thats why i put it into the post

It appears that your installation used btrfs. You may want to check

Aragorn provides nice instructions on how to manually chroot when using btrfs.

You can directly edit the boot parameters of an entry in GRUB by pressing e.
Then just remove quiet and splash and press F10 to boot.

thank you, but sadly changing these parameters doesn’t change much, only this:

*Presses F10*
:: running early hook [udev]
:: running hook [udev]
:: Triggering uevents...
*Black*

I am generally pretty sure that this is not a GRUB issue, but rather something in the boot itself

Try adding nomodeset in the boot parameters.

I would suggest a new install, but using the manual partitioning method, and not choosing a BTRFS filesystem; but, perhaps EXT4 instead.

Alright, I am back into my usual setup, although my monitors aren’t detected properly
(One doesn’t work, and the other doesn’t have any options to change refresh rate to 144 Hz)

Find a common refresh rate between the two monitors
→ even if that refresh rate is only 60 Hz.

When i say that the monitors aren’t detected properly i mean this:

  Monitor-1: Unknown-1 mapped: None-1 res: 1920x1080 hz: 60 dpi: 96
    size: 508x285mm (20x11.22") modes: 1920x1080

for reference:

Monitor-1: DP-2 pos: primary,left model: MSI G24C4 serial: <filter>
    built: 2022 res: 1920x1080 hz: 60 dpi: 94 gamma: 1.2 chroma: red: x: 0.675

    720x576, 720x480, 640x480, 720x400

When I say find a common refresh rate, it is in response to your comment:

…not to whether they are detected, or not.

How the hell am I supposed to find anything, if one of two devices isn’t recognised. I know that both are capable of 60 Hz, but that doesn’t help me in any way.

Hey, here’s a thought…

Why not connect one monitor at a time to make any adjustments.

My intention was to offer a workaround for the side-issue you mentioned, in case it was of use. What you do with it is up to you.

Good luck.

Regarding the main issue, perhaps the black screen is related to the Plymouth splash screen, which is typically a bad player when booting, for many users.

The following article might be of interest; various links to possible solutions and workarounds are also included.

The fact that you are using multiple monitors may indeed complicate diagnosis and potential workarounds. In this case, I also suggest you remove one monitor from the equation while finding a solution.

Cheers.

I cannot change any settings on the monitors, as manjaro has no clue what they actually are, I am lucky it defaults to 1080p 60Hz.

I have made some looking up, nomodeset is the cause for this, but I need a way for the kernel to boot with graphics without the use of the basic graphics mode, since I would very much like to use both of my monitors.

I currently need help troubleshooting the issue with KMS, not troubleshooting my monitors, which work just the way they should.

This thread may potentially be related to your issue.

It’s related to the auto-detection feature of many monitors; if not set correctly, one may not be detected (at boot).
